Sachtler ™
A Vitec Group brand
As the new managing director of the Camera Dynamics Business Unit, where do you consider new trends in this industry?
Roger Wilson: It seems very clear to me that, as with most markets, there are significant shifts in progress which we should take advantage of. The most significant of these shifts appear to be the move to HD, the ongoing need for Robotics to make Studios more efficent, the move to smaller DV formats, and also the fast fragmentation of media formats driven by the internet and site such as You Tube.
Considering these trends, what are your plans for the Camera Dynamics Business Unit? What are your priorities?
Roger Wilson: I think that Innovation must be major driver for our business. It is clear as you look back at the success of our brands that the key innovations are the ones that made a real difference to our business, and that where we have had me-too products, these have become declining product groups and have not generated suitable profitability. I will encourage the teams to think out-of–the–box and generate new ideas that will provide functional or creative benefit to the user, and thus create strong demand for our products. I am encouraged to find that despite the maturity of this market there is still clearly room for making progress with our products, as is proven by the recent introduction of SOOM.
Which precise benefits and possible courses of action does the Camera Dynamics Business Unit establish? Are there any particular plans in this regard?
Roger Wilson: Camera Dynamics is the company that holds together the great brands of Sachtler, Vinten, Vinten Radamec and others. While the brands will ALWAYS take the priority, and will be where we will place our energy, the fact that we have them under one umbrella of Camera Dynamics will be useful in that we can draw upon a broader spectrum of R&D resources. This will greatly help innovation, and we can also combine certain ’back-office‘ activities that will give us greater efficieny while allowing greater flexibility by using bigger consolidated teams
The Sachtler brand is going to celebrate its 50th anniversary next year. Which effect does this have on the strategic agenda for Sachtler?
Roger Wilson: Sachtler’s 50th anniversary will be a tremedous opportunity to remind the trade of the great history of this brand. We can also reconfirm that with the great team of people involved in Sachtler today, we have just as much passion to ensure that we can provide high quality, stunningly reliable products to serve the cameraman as Herr Sachtler had when he founded the company back in the 1950s.
