Wendelin Sachtler was always on the search for innovative ideas – even in his private life. He observed his environment closely and paid attention to each detail. For many it was a common sight when suddenly, during a cosy get together, he would start to sketch on napkins or pieces of paper, so that he could later expand further on his ideas. This was how he was the first to use carbon fibre tubes as tripod legs, after seeing the ease with which competitive athletes used their cross-country ski poles.

Even in his spare time he was always open to new adventures. As a passionate amateur radio operator, he looked for contact with other, technology orientated people. At that time the radio operators swapped confirmation postcards with their personal motif, if they had been on a radio station with each other. In addition, adventurous travels with his 60 HP motorboat meant “relaxation” for Wendelin Sachtler, be it from the Danube to the Black Sea or four days around Corsica.
