Berlin gains another dimension: Paul Stutenbäumer shoots a 3D documentary in Berlin with the Sachtler Video 18 SB.

For filmmakers, Berlin has always had a special charm. From Wim Wenders’ "Wings of Desire" to...

For filmmakers, Berlin has always had a special charm. From Wim Wenders’ "Wings of Desire" to Michael Ballhaus` documentary "In Berlin" – the city offers filmmakers a variety of facets and perspectives that inspire and influence their work.

A particularly notable film project has recently started in Berlin. Instead of using the usual two dimensions to bring pictures of the city to the screen, this project will add another dimension: Camera operator, director of photography, and producer Paul Stutenbäumer from Berlin has begun work on "Berlin in 3D". Along with his team, he will capture Berlin three-dimensionally in the next few weeks and thus bring images of the capital – "with depth" – to the screen.

For the shoot, two Ikegami Editcam HD cameras, mounted on a Sachtler Video 18 SB fluid head are being used. It is necessary to provide precise movement for the two cameras that are mounted upside down and parallel to each other or in a horizontal mirror rig. Despite the high total weight, smooth and steady pans can be achieved. Due to its payload range from 2 to 18 kg, the Sachtler Video 18 SB is ideally designed for this type of mounting and thus for 3D shoots. Paul Stutenbäumer uses the Sachtler Speed Lock CF tripod as well as the Sachtler Cine Mitchell tripod with a Worral Gear Head.

The first recordings of Berlin hot spots have already been made. The Reichstag, the Office of the Federal Chancellor, the Brandenburg Gate and the Victory Column have already been filmed in 3D. The material will be shot during different seasons and should be available by around 2012.

Sachtler artemis camera stabilizer system: Perfect camera work for the coverage of sports events

Camera stabilizing in any situation – whether at football matches or boxing. The artemis EFP HD...

Camera stabilizing in any situation – whether at football matches or boxing. The artemis EFP HD special edition camera stabilizer system from Sachtler offers optimum functionality for camera work at sports events. The new high-capacity technology ensures an extremely long run time of both the camera and wireless systems. Thanks to Hot Swap technology, the replacement of the batteries is possible without interrupting the power supply to the camera, monitor or transmission path. Furthermore, the artemis EFF HD SE supports the processing of HD SDI video signals of up to 4.5 GHz as well as SD video signals.

German operator Clemens Treml regularly works with the Sachtler camera stabilizer system. He enthusiastically explains, “The artemis system works with all popular camera systems. It’s extremely modular, weatherproof, easy to clean and lightweight so it is ideal for Outdoor Broadcasting.“

With its multitude of characteristics and technical solutions, the artemis EFP HD Special Edition is perfectly adapted to modern HD cameras as well as to digital cinematography. Ideal for covering sports events, which are a particular challenge for camera teams and technology, the artemis system offers an ultra lightweight design as well as longer runtime. This is a decisive advantage, particularly when using wireless cameras. With the artemis high-capacity technology (HiCap), the operator and the OB van technicians are ensured increased reliability of the production process. As artemis developer and operator Curt O. Schaller explains: “Our new HiCap technology is based on a combination of new internal wiring and new connectors designed to maximize energy capacity of the batteries and provide an ultra low level of voltage drop, enabling extremely long runtime.”

Technical Features:

With a total weight of only one kilogram (2,2 lbs), the artemis Handheld is extremely lightweight. The bow form also enables easy handling and simultaneously provides a high level of stability during operation. The system is carried in one hand with a handle while the other hand is free to operate of the camera. With Sachtler Dynamic-Balance technology, the weight distribution is precisely balanced and guarantees jerkfree movement, particularly when using light DSLR cameras. The combination of the system support in the hand grip with the fine adjustment under the camera and the counter weight, ensures excellent balance. This ability to achieve smooth movement and panning enables cinematic scenes to be caught perfectly.

Photojournalist Rea La Greca and photographer Guenter Menn from Germany, started off towards Namibia in the middle of March. For a whole year the team will be traveling through Africa covering around 40,000 km with a motorbike. Sachtler is supporting their project “Wanderer between the worlds“ with the FSB 6 SL MCF tripod system, consisting of the FSB 6 fluid head, the Speed Lock® CF carbon fiber tripod and a middle spreader as well as the Reporter LED camera light and the FSB CELL.

“The FSB 6 tripod system with Sachtler’s carbon fiber Speed Lock® CF impresses us with its combination of quick and easy handling as well as its light weight“, Rea La Greca said. “We will use Sachtler’s Reporter LED as a fill-in light for a Sony PMX EX1R. That way we can give the shots more brilliance and brightness depending on the lighting conditions. The FSB CELL battery is the ideal accessory for it.“

Sachtler Intros new Versions of 2 Classic fluid heads for NAB 2010 – the Video 18 S1 and Video 20 S1

Sachtler will be presenting their latest Video 18 S1 and Video 20 S1 fluid heads at the NAB 2010,...

Sachtler will be presenting their latest Video 18 S1 and Video 20 S1 fluid heads at the NAB 2010, thus relaunching two real classics in this field. Due to their expansive payload range both heads are perfectly suited for the use with DSLRs shooting HD videos such as Canon‘s 5D Mark II or 7D.

Video 18 S1 and Video 20 S1 are the latest models of the legendary ENG/EFP heads Video 18 and Video 20. The two principal new advantages included in the S1 models is that both fluid heads now have a 16-level counterbalance, and the Video 20 S1 also has an extended payload range. Both heads retain the Video family‘s classic Sachtler Speedbalance technology and a Touch and Go plate.

The expansive payload range starting from 2 kg allows the heads to be used with DSLRs shooting HD videos: Due to their heavy mass in comparison to the camera the tripod heads enable a distinctly precise panning. The new S1 tripod heads are currently available.

New modules, functions and upgrades will augment the current product line, as well as existing artemis systems, to meet future requirements. Product development of the camera stabilizer systems in 2010 will continue to be in line with the ACT2 philosophy, representing the second generation of the artemis component technology.

"Efficient and precise": New Video 20 S1 fluid head tested with DSLR camera

German film director Marko Vucic and his team were among the first to test the new Video 20 S1...

German film director Marko Vucic and his team were among the first to test the new Video 20 S1 fluid head made by Sachtler with a DSLR camera shooting HD videos. The Video 20 S1 is the latest model of the ENG / EFP Video 20 head.

Marko Vucic has been working with the Canon EOS 5D Mark II. “The new Video 20 S1 combines reliable quality with new features. Together with DSLRs, the movie tube PR and the Zeiss Compact Primes CP.2, which we favour, it is a fantastic combination. However, since such a system quickly runs up a weight of 15 kg or more, it must be used with the 100 mm tripod. Only then is it possible to work efficiently and precisely with the relatively small camera, which is not optimized for filming.“ The payload of the Video 20 S1 now starts at 2 kg instead of 7 kg and ends at 25 kg.

The counterbalance of the Sachtler Video 20 S1 has been increased from 4 steps up to 16 steps, providing for especially fine adjustment. Important functions for daily production include the Boost Button for a quick payload range shift, parking positions for spare camera screws, a Touch & Go plate, as well as the Sachtler Speedbalance Technology. Marko Vucic says, “Even minor technical improvements and simplified handling are worth more than gold for those working every day with this equipment.”

For the second time, the Dakar Press team has durable Sachtler equipment on board their Toyota and has subjected it to one of the hardest performance tests ever: heat, dust, wind and little care.
TV stations in Poland and in Turkey have equipped their teams with Sachtler equipment. They chose Sachtler due to the excellent quality and the superior price-benefit ratio.

Polish television network TVP has thus far ordered 31 Sachtler Video 18 SB fluid heads along with carbon fiber tripods. Furthermore they chose three 25 C III systems which each consist of the Video 25 Plus fluid head and the C III Pedestal. In 2007 the TV station had previously purchased a large quantity of Sachtler equipment. With the new order, all of the TV station´s teams are now equipped with the same Sachtler support gear.

A major Turkish TV station also trusts the reliable Sachtler equipment. Three news studios of the station will be equipped with 90 Sachtler Topas 220TM lights. This fluorescent light offers extremely consistent light distribution and draws considerably less electrical power than traditional studio lighting fixtures.

On January 18, approximately 500 vehicles finished in Argentina's capital Buenos Aires, which was the race’s starting point. Among those who returned were the “DakarPress” press team who had been provided with Sachtler equipment, including the SOOM HiPod system, the 18 SL CF tripod system, the FSB 6 and FSB CELL, as well as the Reporter 8LED. Bikers, quad riders as well as car and truck teams participated in the 31st Dakar Rally in South America.

The 14 stages of the 9,500 km desert rally presented the drivers with extreme challenges. The members of the DakarPress team, including cameramen, photographers and journalists, worked under demanding conditions such as heat, dust and rough terrain – like everybody else. As soon as the drivers showed up, the equipment had to be ready. The functional SOOM proved to be the ideal tool, being easy to carry, versatile and extremely robust. The team also relied on the innovative FSB CELL that provided optimal power, the compact Reporter 8LED for proper lighting and the versatile FSB 6 for well-balanced pan-shots.

Léon Jansen currently is in the thick of things: he’s a member of a Dutch press team accompanying the famous Rally Dakar (former Paris-Dakar). And Sachtler is there with him, supporting Jansen and his colleagues with professional camera support equipment, including the multifunctional SOOM. Held in South America, the race's route crosses through the spacious landscapes between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

Since January 3, 2009, the press team have been on their way with two Toyota Land Cruisers. The team of eight includes two cameramen, five photographers and one journalist, who is responsible for interviews. The desert rally makes high demands – not only on the drivers. The equipment is also exposed to extreme conditions. But the robust, lightweight and versatile SOOM is ideal for working between dunes. At this point, the drivers have reached Valparaiso, Chile on the Pacific coast and are half way through the route.

Sachtler’s multifunctional SOOM has already received five awards. Now the versatile camera support tool has won the Good Design Award 2008 (GDA) in Japan. The GDA is Japan’s most important design prize and is awarded by a jury mainly made up of product, graphic and industry designers. They focus on concepts and designs that will influence the lifestyle of coming generations.

In addition to the GDA, SOOM has won important industry awards like the DV Black Diamond Award, the TV Technology Star, the Vidy Award, the Digital Content Producer Pick Hit as well as 4EVER Group’s Product Innovation Award. Each jury was impressed by the tool’s unique modular and multifunctional concept: at low weight, three individual elements can be variably combined, thus offering a wide range of possible applications. The “Works with SOOM” series offers products completing the GDA-awarded system perfectly: the Sachtler FSB 2 and FSB 6 fluid heads, FSB CELL battery system as well as the Reporter 8LED on-camera light.

The Vitec Group plc., Sachtler's parent company, has gained a new member: Litepanels, the market leader of the LED lighting systems. Litepanels offers an innovative range of LED lights for the TV, video and film industry.

A large factor in the decision to incorporate Litepanels into the Vitec Group is the energy efficiency of Litepanels' LED light technology. Compared to tungsten lights, in which nearly 95 percent of the power is lost to heat generation, only 50 percent of an LED light's energy is lost to heat. The energy savings from Litepanels LED fixtures is amplified by the need for less air conditioning on the stage. “Our goal is to bundle innovative and promising products within the Vitec Group. Our leading brands Sachtler (Reporter luminaires) and Anton/Bauer (Ultralight and ElightZ) will continue to develop their camera and location luminaire lines. With Litepanels we are now able to offer customers an extensive array of LED products,“ emphasises Joop Jansen, Chief Executive of the Vitec Group, Broadcast Systems Division at the IBC 2008.

At the IBC, Sachtler, a Vitec Group brand, will present a version of its camera stabilizing system artemis EFP Pro HD SDI, which is compatible with the RED and all current digital HD cameras. For years this internationally patented system has worldwide been the only one equipped with a 3 GHz video lead, enabling professional work with HD-SDI cameras.

At Sachtler’s IBC exhibition booth (9.C40) the system can be tested “hands-on”. The artemis EFP Pro HD SDI can process basically all conventional video signals (SD, SD SDI, HD RGB, HD SDI), thus representing a cross-over system. The multi-functional camera stabilizing system is also geared for productions in HDTV format, making it “an all around fit for the future of digital cameras”, as emphasised by Jürgen Greithanner. At the booth further systems of the product range as well as current product highlights – such as the new artemis ACT 2 Carbon spring arm and the flexible and comfortable artemis ACT 2 vest – can also be tested.

At IBC 2008 Joop Janssen, CEO Broadcast Systems Division, Vitec Group plc talks about investigation in future product development and innovation in the EMEA production sector.

„While worldwide market penetration of the HD camera is still far below the 50% mark, EMEA market growth has gained momentum in the last 12 months. While HD in News still has to take off, with accelerating growth in new HD channels in Europe and the global support of the Blue-Ray disc format, HD camera sales will grow rapidly and catch up with the American market in the next few years.

In addition to High Definition transition, the continuing increase in the number of live events being broadcast to international audiences is definitely driving our industry forward. This brings tremendous opportunities for new products and technologies that address the flexibility and transportability these live events require. For example, wireless camera systems in HD format or Voice over IP communication systems.

The other area where we are seeing strong growth is the move to automated and Virtual Reality studios. The beauty of broadcast robotics and content automation is that it allows broadcasters to develop new working methods that use the technology and the human input each to best advantage.

This opens up the market for many small, tightly run broadcast organisations to deliver high quality, creative programming for audiences in a range of entertainment formats.“

The compact SOOM HiPod system consists of the SOOM TriPod, the SOOM TriSpread (usable as a mini tripod and a mini spreader) and the SOOM tube (Monopod): three products, four application possibilities. It’s modularity and light weight, 5.8kg enables the SOOM to capture not only event, documentary and advertising filming, but also work allows cameramen to work single handedly.

At test units "experts" tell of their experiences with SOOM. For individual hands on, there are not only the individual modules from SOOM available, this tool can be also combined with the "Works with SOOM products" from Sachtler: FSB 2, FSB 6, FSB CELL, Reporter 8LED.

According to Sergio Brighel, technical director of Trans Audio Video, Italy, who held a lecture at the 2008 Sachtler retailer meeting, the few letters PD-150 stand for "the" change in the video landscape. Although originally not designed for professionals, this small camera brought about a "revolution". From his point of view the Sony PD-150’s entry into the market at the end of the 90's, was a breakthrough: acceptable quality at low cost meant that the film and video market suddenly opened up for thousands of new players. For this new type of cameramen, Brighel coined the term "DV Class". "Due to the advent of new camera types financial resources are no longer crucial, often the way of production will be “calibrated” to meet the available budget.”

The DV Class is defined by know-how which hasn’t been acquired traditionally. “This group gather information via the Internet, experience no longer plays such a crucial role.” A further important change to the traditional structures is that due to the digitisation of the world the exchange of information is immediate. "New technology trends from the USA are no longer delayed coming to Europe. Thus hype topics and myths about products and technologies are spread quickly and uncontrolled ", observes Sergio Brighel. He is worried that with these new possibilities, the quality of productions could suffer. "The paradigm, the better the equipment, the better the result, no longer applies. Especially with news, short movies, low-budget films and simple OB films the focus is on content rather than quality. " Brighel reckons that the film industry will also be increasingly affected by these developments, followed by the traditional broadcast and TV market.

On the occasion of celebrating its 50th anniversary the heritage brand Sachtler, a Vitec Group-Camera Dynamics brand is planning a photographic documentary of its products’ history and an in-house company museum. Sachtler is currently looking for the oldest Sachtler tripod heads still in use or stored away in a cellar or garage.

In 1958 the company’s founder Wendelin Sachtler (1923-1979) developed his first tripod head. This so-called gyro head was gyro-stabilised, similar to a marine compass. In 1967 the next step for the persevering inventor and his then partner Heinrich Wolf was to develop the first fluid heads with lubrication grease damping, which in 1974 were manufactured with adjustable damping.

“We already are in possession of numerous rarities originating from the beginnings of the company, however, the anniversary year is a welcome opportunity for us to document and expand this collection as well as to get down to planning a museum”, says Marketing Assistant Sandra Rademacher. The company is mainly interested in tripod heads and tripods from the 1960s and 70s from Sachtler and Sachtler & Wolf, respectively.

Campaign for universities and schools
Additionally, in this anniversary year Sachtler is going to start a campaign for media faculties in universities and schools: each school can submit their oldest tripod head - the three oldest heads can be exchanged for a current fluid head model.

Sachtler invites owners of such rarities to contact Sandra Rademacher at sandra.rademacher@vitecgroup.com or +49 89 321-58-125 by 31 August 2008 the latest. Today 80 children live there, cared for by foster parents and medical specialists. In an effort to promote this worthy project to the public which is financed by donations the organisation is preparing a documentary film about BaanGerda. Sachtler is providing support by giving the project’s filmmakers a Fluid Head DV1 and Tripod ENG 75/2 D equipped with a mid-level spreader to use for their filming.

"We are excited about the support given to children infected with HIV and are pleased to be able to help with this important project“, explains Sandra Rademacher, Marketing Assistant at Sachtler. The world market leader of professional camera support systems is involved with several other projects, which help the plight of others, including BaanGerda.

Living and laughing without worries
As opposed to traditional homes for children, the living situation for the orphans in BaanGerda is more like being in a family, each family unit is supervised by either two widows or a married couple, who also carry the HIV virus. The daily activites in the village are geared to the children’s infection, which requires constant medical attention. Nevertheless, the children are able to develop like most other healthy children growing up in a family. The activities of the organisation help the children of BaanGerda experience the thing they need most: carefree laughter and love.

For further information see: www.baangerda.org

He observed his environment closely and paid attention to each detail. For many it was a common sight when suddenly, during a cosy get together, he would start to sketch on napkins or pieces of paper, so that he could later expand further on his ideas. This was how he was the first to use carbon fibre tubes as tripod legs, after seeing the ease with which competitive athletes used their cross-country ski poles.

Even in his spare time he was always open to new adventures. As a passionate amateur radio operator, he looked for contact with other, technology orientated people. At that time the radio operators swapped confirmation postcards with their personal motif, if they had been on a radio station with each other. In addition, adventurous travels with his 60 HP motorboat meant “relaxation” for Wendelin Sachtler, be it from the Danube to the Black Sea or four days around Corsica.

Sachtler celebrates 50 years
More information about 50 years "ideas in motion"

The Sachtler team was very pleased with the excellent response at the NAB. In contrast to the fair’s trend – there was a decrease in visitors – Sachtler’s stand at the “NAB Vitec Group Village” attracted even more visitors than last year. At the centre of the visitors’ attention were, of course, Sachtler’s latest products, as team members noted. “A positive effect for Sachtler was that the NAB proved to be not only a “presentation fair” but also a genuine interest in buying also prevailed”, observed Jürgen Sommer, Director of Brand Development, Camera Dynamics.

50 years of Sachtler
The Sachtler team not only presented the latest products but also the new, hot-off-the-press Sachtler catalogue. The innovative 2008 edition, with its combination of magazine and catalogue, marks the beginning of the activities marking the company´s 50th anniversary. Fifty years ago, cameraman Wendelin Sachtler started to develop fluid heads in a small workshop in Munich. Today, Sachtler is a global player, a company which still operates in accordance with its founder’s principles of robust construction, quality and, above all, a focus on filmmakers’ needs. This striving for success was once again encouraged and confirmed by the five awards for product innovation which the Sachtler team took home from the fair.

to "Five Awards for SOOM"

to "4EVER Group Award for On-Board Light"

to "50 Years of Sachtler"

Sachtler, a Vitec Group Camera Dynamics brand, received five prestigious awards at the 2008...

Sachtler, a Vitec Group Camera Dynamics brand, received five prestigious awards at the 2008 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) convention for its 4-in-one camera support device, the SOOM. Jurors for the TV Technology STAR 2008, DV Black Diamond Award 2008, The Vidy Award 2008, Digital Content Producer NAB Pick Hit 08 and The 4EVER Group Product Innovation Award, each presented the SOOM with top honors.

SOOM consists of a tripod, a monopod and a baby tripod, designed for use with Sachtler’s FSB fluid heads as well as all the other 75mm bowl fluid heads by Sachtler. The tripod and monopod can be combined to create the SOOM HiPod system to place the camera where it can shoot over crowds or other obstacles. In keeping with Sachtler’s slogan, “ideas in motion” the SOOM’s modularity offers camera operators maximum flexibility in day-to-day production, enhancing freedom for spontaneous creativity.

Leightweight, flexible, multifunctional
SOOM can be converted from its various configurations easily and swiftly, without the use of tools.

Sachtler, a Vitec Group Camera Dynamics brand, received the prestigious Product Innovation Award from The 4EVER Group at the 2008 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) convention for its Reporter 8LED on-camera light fixture. The 4EVER Group represents the event videographers, and presents its awards in the interest of directing more vendor resources to the event video community.

In designing its Reporter 8LED light fixture, Sachtler placed special emphasis on durability, compactness and flexibility. The portable fixture provides all advantages of the latest LED technology: energy efficiency, the exceptionally long life of LEDs, extremely low failure rate and minimal heat generation.

Exchangeable LED module
A rigid splash-proof aluminium housing allows use of the Reporter 8LED in extreme shooting situations. The user can apply three different accessory sets to provide a wide range of light design solutions. The fixture can be used for example as a small location light by placing it on a stand or suspending it using grip equipment available in one of the optional accessory kits.

The Sachtler Reporter 8LED is available in a standard daylight version. However, an exchangeable LED module makes it a simple matter to convert the fixture to a tungsten light. Operators can also make quick, tool-free adjustments of the beam angle by replacing the lens module. The unit’s rotatable 4-leaf barndoor frame detaches easily through its quick-release mechanism, allowing for fast and easy lens changes.

More information, visit: www.sachtler.com

more about Reporter 8LED

A look ahead: Sachtler at the 2008 NAB

The Camera Dynamics super-booth at the 2008 NAB in Las Vegas will feature a host of new Sachtler...

The Camera Dynamics super-booth at the 2008 NAB in Las Vegas will feature a host of new Sachtler products, including the multifunctional cam-era support tool SOOM, Sachtler's first on-camera LED light Reporter 8LED, the artemis ACT 2 aluminium spring arm (and carbon fiber upgrade) and the artemis ACT 2 vest.

SOOM – Infinite Possibilities
The SOOM was a show-stopper at the IBC exhibition in Amsterdam last fall, and is generating excitement now in the United States. SOOM provides professional and semi-professional Mini DV and (H)DV users a 75 mm tripod, monopod and baby tripod that can be cleverly combined to create the SOOM HiPod system to boost the camera to a maximum height of 250 cm (8’ 2.5”). “Modularity, flexibility and compatibility are not only catchwords, but with SOOM they are reality,” said Robert Zierer, product manager with Sachtler.

The lightweight SOOM easily transforms into four configurations without the need for tools, and folds compactly for easy transport. With SOOM as the centerpiece, Sachtler has formed a “Works with SOOM” line of compatible products, including fluid heads FSB 2 and FSB 6, the under-camera battery FSB CELL and the LED on-camera light Reporter 8LED.

At IBC, Germany’s key industry trade magazine, Film & TV Kameramann wrote that Sachtler has again shown itself a leader in the trend towards professional production in HDV. And the TV Technology jury awarded SOOM the coveted Superior Technology Award Recipient (STAR) Award at the show.

Intense light for all purposes: on-camera light Reporter 8LED
Another premiere for the US market at NAB will be: the on-camera Re-porter 8LED, Sachtler’s first LED light fixture. Because the Reporter 8LED operates from a low-level input voltage of 6 to 24 volts, it can be perfectly paired and share a power with small 7.2 volt (H)DV cameras as well as with all commonly used broadcast camcorders. Intelligent optional acces-sory sets expand the light’s configuration possibilities and provide a wide range of light design solutions.

artemis – die ACT 2 range keeps growing
At NAB, Sachtler will present a carbon upgrade for the artemis ACT 2 aluminium spring arm, and the ACT 2 vest.
The upgrade replaces the arm’s aluminium bones with carbon fiber. This provides several advantages for the operator:

Less weight

Extreme stiffness

Even more sensitive responding properties

The new ACT 2 vest is constructed of breathable nylon cordura and fits all operators due to the seven ergonomically designed vest segments that can be placed freely at the right position, following the shape and height of the operator's body. It is also equipped with the American standard industry vest-arm connector (mating block) and therefore fully compatible to systems and spring arms of other manufacturers. The ACT 2 vest is de-signed for camera stabilizing systems including the artemis EFP, EFP Pro HD SDI, Cine, and Cine HD.

More information on the product novelties - SOOM, Reporter 8LED and artemis – are available on the respective product pages.

The next dimension

What do the carbon upgrade for the new artemis ACT 2 spring arm and a Formula One racing car have...

What do the carbon upgrade for the new artemis ACT 2 spring arm and a Formula One racing car have in common? Their “drivers” love speed and treasure lightweight materials. That’s why the Sachtler developers’ decision to use carbon fiber was a natural choice. Following extensive testing, the world’s first carbon upgrade for a spring arm is now ready for large-scale production.

Compared to conventional materials, carbon fiber is not only extremely light-weight, it also offers other advantages. "The ACT 2 carbon upgrade is an exceptionally lightweight arm with outstanding resistance and an even more sensitive response behavior than all existing spring arms," comments Curt O. Schaller, himself a camera operator and one of the developers of the artemis systems. In the carbon upgrade the aluminium arm bones of the existing ACT 2 aluminium model are simply replaced with carbon arm bones.

Proven and innovative new features tested in extreme conditions
Just like the original ACT 2 aluminium model, the carbon upgrade is based on a lightweight, torsion-free design and features three, quick-to-change spring sets from 11 to 26 kg / 24 to 57 lb. During the development stage the Sachtler engi-neers benefited from intensive cooperation with experts from the motor racing industry, profiting especially from their extensive knowledge of the sensitive na-ture of carbon fiber. The prototype was tested for its stability and safety in ex-treme material tests. The Development Team reported that "in one test we used a vibration table to subject the spring arm to continuous impact and shaking for three hours. Even after continuously being subjected under full load to 40,000 lifts in one session in the simulator at the Sachtler Development Laboratory, the material was completely unaffected."

Steadiness and speed for the hectic world of day-to-day production
The characteristic of carbon fiber makes the ACT 2 most suitable for fast movements. Direct comparison with the aluminium version reveals very clearly the useful nature – and difference – between the two versions. The aluminium version of the ACT 2 has a characteristic that is ideal for normal walking paces and slow jogging. If the operator speeds up from a normal walking pace into a slow jog, the spring arm becomes even steadier the faster he goes.

The ACT 2 spring arm with the carbon upgrade likes it even faster. For carbon fiber, the characteristic causes the arm to move in an extremely steady way, the faster the operator runs. For example, when used by an operator running along the sideline of a soccer field, the ACT 2 carbon upgrade is in its element. At such speed the spring arm follows exactly the operator’s movements without producing any additional vibration or bouncing whatsoever. With the ACT 2 aluminium spring arm, Sachtler developers created an amazingly fast and agile arm. The new carbon upgrade represents a further advance in speed and comfort during long periods of shooting.

Remaining at the top with innovations

Roger Wilson is the name of the new one, who for some months now has been at the top of camera...

As the new managing director of the Camera Dynamics Business Unit, where do you consider new trends in this industry?
Roger Wilson: It seems very clear to me that, as with most markets, there are significant shifts in progress which we should take advantage of. The most significant of these shifts appear to be the move to HD, the ongoing need for Robotics to make Studios more efficent, the move to smaller DV formats, and also the fast fragmentation of media formats driven by the internet and site such as You Tube.

Considering these trends, what are your plans for the Camera Dynamics Business Unit? What are your priorities?
Roger Wilson: I think that Innovation must be major driver for our business. It is clear as you look back at the success of our brands that the key innovations are the ones that made a real difference to our business, and that where we have had me-too products, these have become declining product groups and have not generated suitable profitability. I will encourage the teams to think out-of–the–box and generate new ideas that will provide functional or creative benefit to the user, and thus create strong demand for our products. I am encouraged to find that despite the maturity of this market there is still clearly room for making progress with our products, as is proven by the recent introduction of SOOM.

Which precise benefits and possible courses of action does the Camera Dynamics Business Unit establish? Are there any particular plans in this regard?
Roger Wilson: Camera Dynamics is the company that holds together the great brands of Sachtler, Vinten, Vinten Radamec and others. While the brands will ALWAYS take the priority, and will be where we will place our energy, the fact that we have them under one umbrella of Camera Dynamics will be useful in that we can draw upon a broader spectrum of R&D resources. This will greatly help innovation, and we can also combine certain ’back-office‘ activities that will give us greater efficieny while allowing greater flexibility by using bigger consolidated teams

The Sachtler brand is going to celebrate its 50th anniversary next year. Which effect does this have on the strategic agenda for Sachtler?
Roger Wilson: Sachtler’s 50th anniversary will be a tremedous opportunity to remind the trade of the great history of this brand. We can also reconfirm that with the great team of people involved in Sachtler today, we have just as much passion to ensure that we can provide high quality, stunningly reliable products to serve the cameraman as Herr Sachtler had when he founded the company back in the 1950s.

“The Re-inventing of camera support”

Cameraman Mike Steffl talks about SOOM – Sachtler's new camera support system

SOOM, the first multifunctional camera tool developed by Sachtler, offers camera operators a series of modules that can be combined to optimise shots in almost any location or situation. Mike Steffl, a cameraman at the Bavarian Broadcast Corporation probably knows the SOOM system better than almost any other broadcast professional. He gave it extensive testing just a few weeks before its world premiere at IBC 2007 in Amsterdam, where he also presented the system to a rapt audience.

Mike Steffl, you were one of the first cameramen to test SOOM. How do you rate the system?
Mike Steffl: Sachtler has achieved a huge success with the SOOM system. Even though the system is very innovative, the company still paid attention to the key qualities of reliability, robustness and flexibility. At the IBC, I disassembled the SOOM into its individual components and reassembled it again countless times each day, and never had any problems or difficulties. I was totally impressed with the SOOM system.

Which of the system's features caught you by surprise? What distinguishes it from other tripod systems?
Mike Steffl: The system's flexibility, combined with its high stability and light weight, fascinated me from the beginning. But what really surprised me was the concept a camera support system combining a very tall, normal tripod, monopod and baby tripod. A tripod system that offers the SOOM's range of applications has been missing on the market until now. The awesome maximum lens height of 98.4" (2.5 m ), and the integrated function of the baby tripod are really impressive. No other tripod system offers this brilliant double function of the mid-level spreader, where It can be removed to serve as a baby tripod. Sachtler has virtually redefined camera support.

Are there any weaknesses or anything else that Sachtler's developers need to take into account for the future?
Mike Steffl: In the end there are always tiny modifications that can be made, the need for which arises from handling systems on a daily basis and using them in diverse practical applications. The SOOM system I presented at the IBC, however, was trimmed right down for the harsh realities of day-to-day production. The only tip I would offer is the need for wheels on the transport bag.

What kind of camera operators would you recommend the SOOM system to?
Mike Steffl: The SOOM system is exclusively designed for cameras up to around
13.2 lb (6 kg) in weight. These cameras are being increasingly used, for example, in the areas of (H)DV or Mini-DV, whether in the semi-professional field of wedding shoots, the professional field of documentaries and reports, or even as backup for the “heavyweight” cameras. I would especially recommend the SOOM for solo shoots. It's an ideal companion in all situations, with its high flexibility, low weight and maximum reliability, are decisive reasons for its success.

Additional modules in the SOOM series are already being developed. What's on your personal wish list?
Mike Steffl: My main wish would be to adopt the innovative double function – the mid-level spreader and baby-tripod rolled into one – for the complete range of Sachtler tripods. Whether or not this is realized will be answered by the Sachtler developers. At the 2007 IBC I often heard people discussing this possibility. I would like to see every professional cameraman checking the SOOM system out, as the operative range of small cameras – and their quality – is becoming increasingly interesting for all broadcasters.

These days a product is launched after undergoing intensive discussion at designer meetings, as well as extremely thorough material tests and computer-aided design. Back in 1958, on the other hand, camera support engineering was in its pioneering days. 1958 was the year Sachtler was founded, and at that time company still operated out of a small garage workshop in Munich. Product development back then was quite different to that of today.

Product development over a cup of coffee
Leonhard Jaumann is one of Sachtler’s most experienced development engineers. A student trainee who worked for Wendelin Sachtler in 1971, Jaumann is still strongly influenced by his experiences with Sachtler’s founding father. “We usually designed new products using hand-drawn sketches spread across the table. We discussed the sketches and, where necessary, altered them on the spot. Sometimes people from the film branch came by for a cup of coffee, and joined in on our discussions. We had no written guidelines to follow – Wendelin Sachtler was always looking over your shoulder as you worked at the construction desk.”

Ski poles as tripod tubes
Jaumann believes Wendelin Sachtler’s success was not only due to his close relationship with the branch, but also a result of his overwhelming determination to create the best products. “He was a tinkerer and an unconventional, lateral thinker. One day as he was cross-country skiing, he saw lightweight, carbon fiber ski poles for the first time. So he immediately did everything he could to lay his hands on carbon fiber, and soon manufactured considerably lighter tripods than his competitors.” Long periods of planning were rare, and new ideas were often tried out spontaneously. “Even in later years, Wendelin Sachtler still worked on his company’s products with his own hands, searched for suitable materials, re-worked details, and tried out new principles,” recalls Jaumann.

Things that never change
Wendelin Sachtler was directly involved in both the technical and construction aspects of new products, but his involvement didn’t stop there. Fifty years ago, he also did the work that marketing and sales departments do today. “He made the first international contacts, carried out extensive sales talks and even helped set-up trade fair stands,” remembers Jaumann.

One thing hasn’t changed. “Wendelin Sachtler wanted his products to speak for themselves and to convince broadcasters through their quality and functionality. That’s why he made sure from the very beginning that his products would be easy to recognize. His distinctive ‘S’ has become an extremely catchy product logo, known all over the world.”

A highly-impressed jury recently awarded the Argentinian film El Otro (“The Other”) by Ariel Rotter two Silver Bears at the Internationalen Film Festival 2007 in Berlin. The awards were the Jury Grand Prize, awarded to the director himself, and the Best Actor award won by Julio Chávez.

A key member of the film crew was Argentinian camera operator, Peter Trivino. Despite a host of tricky shooting situations, he and his artemis Cine HD system sprang into action, delivering outstanding pictures for “El Otro”. For example, the Estacion Terminal de Liniers, the large central bus terminal in Buenos Aires, was one such difficult location. The producers were given permission to shoot for only two hours - too short to set up the equipment needed for a conventional set-based shoot. Peter came to the rescue with his artemis Cine HD system, filming all the scenes in less than two hours. For more information about how this film was shot and Peter's experiences with his artemis system, visit Made with Sachtler.

Step by faltering step, however, 16-year-old Dan learns about some of life's difficulties in the adult world. On the way he meets his first love and tries to come to grips with the strange new feelings that arise. 48 Shades (Australia, 2006), a coming-of-age comedy by director Daniel Lapaine, has received rave revues, and not just from teenagers.

The adolescent comedy was shot by, among others, camera man Tony Luu, who used his old Sachtler studio head 7+7. Even though this head has not been manufactured for over 10 years, it is still used widely in professional shoots. The classic head, together with Tony, even appeared in the cover picture of the Australian Cinematographers March 2007 edition, which also ran a review of the film. The cover photo featuring Tony Luu and the studio head 7 + 7 was shot by photographer Thom Kotis.

NAB 2007: Sachtler fluid head receives three awards

The show moves on: After the world’s largest trade convention has closed its doors, there’s not...

The show moves on: After the world’s largest trade convention has closed its doors, there’s not much time for most of the 1,400 exhibitors to unpack their bags – the highlights for the next congress show in the 2007 season need to be prepared. As the NAB once again showed, only those who bring innovative products with them, score big. Like Sachtler, for example, its NAB congress team took home three awards for new products from the USA. A clear indication that Sachtler products are shaping the future.

Strength in unity: Camera Dynamics Business Unit

For the first time, Sachtler was represented by a 400 square meter booth as a member of the Camera Dynamics Business Unit – together with Vinten, Vinten Radamec and OConnor. Such cooperation is part of a concept that is gaining popularity: “More and more manufacturers and their partners are working together. Full service in every aspect of camera workflow is a growing trend – a fact that was clearly displayed at the NAB” according to Jürgen Sommer, Director of Brand Development in the Camera Dynamics Business Unit. The integration of different systems and cooperation between manufacturers reflect the current demands being made by customers. “Our cliental are delighted that, with the integration of Sachtler into the Camera Dynamics family, they now have access to new generations of products that combine the very best technologies available.”

In terms of overall interest, Sachtler was also part of a growing trend: the Sachtler team was kept busy greeting NAB organizers and more potential overseas buyers at the combined Camera Dynamics Business Unit booth, than ever before. This was directly reflected in their sales figures at the exhibition: four artemis camera stabilizing systems flew from the fair to their new homes in South America, and two systems were also purchased by European customers.

Combined excellence: Successful new products

The new fluid heads FSB 2 and FSB 6 and the FSB CELL all met with great interest – not just from visitors to NAB, but also from the experts. The fluid head FSB 6 was presented with three awards at the congressevent. The new heads will be available shortly in the USA and will be launched worldwide at the IBC. And to give users a preview, we will introduce these products in detail in a special newsletter in the very near future.

The newest model in the artemis series, the artemis DV Pro FX, and the new spring arm ACT 2 for large systems, both attracted huge numbers of visitors to the stand. At the artemis “hands-on” exhibit, experienced operators Billy Parks (USA) and Curt O. Schaller (Germany), both showed just how far you can go with the revolutionary camera stabilizing systems. “The visitors almost had to stand in line to test the systems. After a short time, there was a real trail left behind on the stand’s floor from all the prospective operators going up and down with the artemis”, reports Jürgen Sommer. With its new turnkey solutions, Sachtler convincingly demonstrated that its products are HD-ready and that HD camera operators can rely on the classic Sachtler qualities: innovation, robustness and reliability.

Sachtler proudly unveiled the new FSB 2 and FSB 6 fluid heads for MiniDV/HDV at NAB where they received three prestigious awards: the TV Technology Star Award, the Videography Vidy Award and the DV Black Diamond Award
(FSB 6) - all for outstanding technology. The design principles employed to develop the new F-series heads are based on the highly successful SPEEDBALANCE (SB) technology employed on Sachtler´s larger heads.

The new FSB 2 and FSB 6 fluid heads are the first on the market to support payloads from 0 to 2 kg/0 to 4.4. lbs (FSB 2) and 1 to 6 kg/2.2 to 13.2 lbs (FSB 6) and feature the Sachtler sideload Snap & Go mechanism. In addition, the FSB 6 is the only head in its range to feature 10-step counterbalance, while the FSB 2 offers a 2-step counterbalance setting of 0 and 1. The heads provide three dampening steps in both pan and tilt directions, as well as a zero setting, which deactivates dampening.

Whether you need a quick and easy set-up for ENG and EFP or to perform the perfect pan shooting weddings, documentaries, shorts, etc., the FSB 2 and FSB 6 heads are the ideal solution. When combined with the newly developed Sachtler FSB CELL, the support team becomes a powerful solution. The new FSB CELL is a 10.5 AH lithium rechargeable camera battery, which fits directly below the camera to provide 8 hours of power. This ensures maximal flexibility on the job, so that operators can focus on the shoot instead of worrying about the batteryís runtime. Plus, the FSB CELL conveniently incorporates the Sachtler Snap & Go camera attachment system to its top and bottom surfaces for sure and easy connection between the camera and the head.

The Sachtler FSB 2 and FSB 6 heads will be available in the USA by IBC 2007.

NAB 2007: The view beyond

Even though the Sachtler NAB team had little time to visit other booths at the congressconvention,...

Even though the Sachtler NAB team had little time to visit other booths at the convention, they still saw plenty of the highlights and trends – at their own! One such sensation was the RED One Digital Cinema with RED camera. There, Jim Jannard, founder of glasses and gadget manufacturer Oakley, demonstrated once again that this project is no gimmick. With ever-increasing resolution, the RED ONE 4K has now developed to the point of ultra-HD. More importantly, these cameras can now be produced at easily affordable prices. The hype surrounding the RED cameras, which were demonstrated on OConnor heads, was correspondingly large. Visitors to the booth had to line up for a minimum of one hour. The RED Cinema One booth presented a venue for a 10-minute short film by Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings). This helped the number of advance orders – already at 1,500 before the NAB – to further increase.

Exhibitors at the NAB were able to confirm another growing trend: In the past, the main focus at the exhibition was cameras. These days, it is necessary to present the complete workflow surrounding a camera. Manufacturers cooperate in order to extend their product range. At the same time, customers can now get a wide range of products – all from the one trusted company. As a result, they only have to deal with one partner for all after-sales service and advice. The trend is now called „full service“. This clearly shows that the Vitec Group and its Business Unit Camera Dynamics are on the right path.

The personal highlight for the Sachtler team was, of course, the receipt of several awards for the FSB 6 fluid head.

On January 1, 2007, Sachtler joined a community of strength with five other leading brands from the broadcast industry. Sachtler became a member of the Vitec Group’s new Camera Dynamics Business Unit. Sachtler itself has been a member of the Vitec Group since 1995.

“This association of leading, extremely well-known brands enables us to significantly expand our market presence. Synergies such as a common sales team, the exchange of know-how, and technology transfer, not only help the company to become more efficient, it also delivers significant benefits to customers,” stresses Jürgen Sommer, Director of Brand Management. Examples of this include the cooperation between Sachtler and Petrol in developing the vest for the artemis camera stabilizing systems, and between Sachtler and OConnor in developing the “Snap & Go” sideload mechanism for the Cine 30 HD. Sommer believes this “institutionalized form of bench-marks” is the way of the future: “Right now Camera Dynamics is being distributed for the first time by a joint sales team. The next step is to use this cooperation to strengthen our dealer network and offer enhanced local service and support. In this way, we will continue to offer innovative products and services, and further consolidate the market leadership.”

Sachtler Academy enthuses the Arab world

The Sachtler Academy presented itself for the first time to a highly enthusiastic Arab audience at the recent CABSAT convention in Dubai. Visitors to CABSAT were particularly interested in the academy’s concept and workshop program. The academy, popular in the media branch especially for its professional lighting and camera operation workshops, is set to intensify its engagement in the Middle East.

The Sachtler Academy presented itself and its program for the first time in the Arab world from 6 – 8 March, 2007. The proposal to hold creative, multi-faceted workshops in the Middle East made an impressive impact at CABSAT. The program pamphlet in Arab and the new image film also attracted a lot of attention from visitors to the convention. Marion Ahrensfeld, responsible at the Academy, comments: “Up to now, we haven’t seen these kinds of workshops in the Arab world, so our program will soon be able to fill this niche in the market. The response from visitors to the convention has strengthened our resolve to become more active here and we will definitely be increasing our engagement in the Middle East.”

Cooperation with a future
Marion Ahrensfeld took advantage of the convention to further develop old contacts and establish new ones. Talks with studio operators and dealers at CABSAT showed that there is great interest to work together with the Sachtler Academy, with some visitors actively offering to make their venues available for workshops. “Our Arab friends hold a similar view of the developments in the branch as we do: These days, professionals who want to stay ahead have to keep on top of continually-developing technical and technological innovations, as well as remaining in close contact with colleagues in order to share experiences. That’s why workshops at the Sachtler Academy are such a good platform,” she adds.

Homepage with Arabic contentThe highly positive response from Arab professionals had another favorable result: visitors to the Sachtler Academy Homepage www.sachtler-academy.com will soon be in able to find the workshop program in Arabic. At present, a questionnaire is being designed that will ask media professionals to propose seminars and content for the program.

It’s only a few days before the 2007 NAB is due to start. When the doors open on the world’s biggest broadcaster exhibition in Las Vegas, everybody in the business would like to be present. Every year, 1,400 exhibitors meet some 105,000 interested visitors from 130 nations. For Las Vegas is the place to see new products, catch up on innovative production methods and take a look at the latest trends, from 14 to 19 April.

Extra for the exhibition: image film and new website presentation
When it comes to sophisticated new products, Sachtler is always present. Sachtler has been represented at the NAB for 27 years and will be exhibiting this year at stand C5923 in the Central Hall, together with the two other companies in the Vitec Group’s Camera Dynamics Business Unit.
As well as its innovative products, Sachtler will be showing its new-look presentation. The new Sachtler website features exciting reports on filming as well as a big range of interesting items for visitors and its latest image film, which will also be running at the exhibition stand, to present a professional overview of its products.

New features for the exhibition: entry-level artemis system
The product developers at Sachtler, Camera Dynamics GmbH have been working hard over the past year, as may be seen from the many new items being shown for the first time at the NAB.
There are a lot of new features in the light rigs for artemis camera stabilizing systems. The artemis DV Pro FX entry-level system will be having its world premiere at the NAB. Not only the youngest member of the artemis family will be delighting visitors: the big boys also have new features. The artemis ACT 2 spring arm, presented for the first time, is even lighter and more stable. With its new pre-tensioning system, the spring tension can be easily adjusted, without any effort, while its optimised bearing makes the arm instantly ready for action.
If you’d like to get your hands on the latest equipment, be sure to visit the stand. At the artemis hands-on, two experienced operators, Billy Parks (USA) and Curt O. Schaller (Germany), will be showing what is important when working with camera stabilizing systems.

Trends at the exhibition: HD keeps the ball moving
According to David K. Rehr, President and CEO of the NAB, the trend towards HDV format continues to grow, not least because all US TV broadcasters must transmit digitally by 2009. This trend is also influencing Sachtler’s product development program. Now, revolutionary products are being launched at the NAB and other coming exhibitions. Their slogan is faster and simpler handling for the best possible pictures! The reliability and high quality standards of Sachtler’s products make life easier for camera operators and help them concentrate on the essentials when on the set: putting creative ideas into practice, simply and with passion.

Giving New Life to Old Heads: Franz Eibel

It’s not just Sachtler’s products that are making history, but also the staff behind the scenes....

It’s not just Sachtler’s products that are making history, but also the staff behind the scenes. While tripods, fluid heads and spotlights help camera operators tell stories, legends also grow around the people behind the “S”. Our “current head” column focuses on these special Sachtler characters.

Sachtler’s fluid heads have made a name for themselves in the industry, but so has Franz Eibel as a member of the service team with a reputation for being a wizard. The 41-year-old admits that he takes great pleasure in the long working-life of Sachtler products and, as a result, is inseparably linked to the products.

If for example something sticks and a tripod head no longer runs smoothly, it’s Franz Eibel who knows exactly what to do. After 22 years of experience in Sachtler’s service workshop, fluid heads hold no secrets from him. While other technicians need sketches and serial numbers to identify a fluid head, a quick glance is often all that Franz Eibel requires.

Even models that have been out of production for years, like the legendary Hollywood head, are in good hands with Eibel. After working his spell in the workshop they come out looking like new. Speedy recoveries such as this save time and eliminate stress for camera operators waiting it out. Camera support advice from Franz Eibel is priceless. He is truly a head above the rest.
