The containers with camera, light and sound equipment eagerly awaited and donated by German companies, finally arrived at the “Friends of film makers and Free Journalism in East Africa (VeFJO) e.V.“ membership association in Uganda after a journey of several month. Sachtler was involved in the project that supports young film students in their education. The VeFJO membership association is dedicated to supporting students at the Kampala University, thus opening up real job prospects.

The equipment that was donated should help make lectures and tutorials more practice-oriented and better prepare students for working life. It is even possible to install a small television studio with the new equipment.

New versions of the classics

IBC, Booth #11.F60

Eching / Germany, IBC 2010 – Sachtler, a Vitec Group brand, presents the Video 18 S1 and Video 20 S1 fluid heads at the IBC 2010. Two classics in the industry are experiencing their relaunch: the newly named S1 derivative fluid heads are the latest models of both legendary Sachtler ENG / EFP heads Video 18 and Video 20. They now have a 16-step counterbalance, as the focus during their further development was on making the balancing system even faster and simpler, an important feature especially for classic use of the heads in news or field production. Due to their expansive payload range both new heads are also suited for the use with DSLRs shooting HD Videos, such as Canon‘s 5D Mark II or 7D.

Broadening the range of counterbalance by four or six steps enables extremely fine tuning which is valued by camera users. Additionally, the payload range of the Video 20 S1 has been expanded: just like the Video 18 S1, it is highly suited to cameras starting at two kilograms instead of seven. Both heads now have a Boost Button for a quick payload range shift and are therefore compatible with a large range of cameras. That way they are not only suitable for the conventional usage in the ENG and EFP areas with digital and HDV camcorders. Due to their heavy mass in comparison to the camera the tripod heads enable precise panning.

The Dakar Rallye challenge

New features such as a considerably more ergonomic control for the counterbalance and new parking positions for spare camera screws are aimed at making life even easier for the cameraman. Sachtler still relies on seven grades of drag for their heads, each horizontally and vertically. The self-illuminating Touch Bubble now only requires one battery. Of course the fluid heads have the well-proven Sachtler Speedbalance technology, a Touch & Go plate and tap holes for the viewfinder extension adapter. The heads have already passed tests under hard conditions with excellent results: the Dakar Press Team worked with the Video 18 S1 fluid head while they were documenting the Dakar Rallye – the S1 has already done justice to the Video 18's reputation as the number one News head.

The fluid heads are available.

From small to large

Eching – The FSB family from Sachtler, a Vitec Group brand, consists of the FSB 4 (0 to 4 kg / 0 –...

Eching – The FSB family from Sachtler, a Vitec Group brand, consists of the FSB 4 (0 to 4 kg / 0 – 9 lbs), FSB 6 (1 to 6 kg / 2 – 13 lbs) and FSB 8 (1 to 9 kg / 2 – 20 lbs) 75 mm heads. The finely-tiered product line provides a suitable head – robust, stable and reliable – for every HDV camera, as well as for DSLR cameras with video function.

The FSB head suitable for the respective shooting conditions can be selected in accordance with different payload ranges. All heads work with the tried and tested Sachtler Speedbalance technology that enables a fast and target-oriented counterbalance. Based on the construction principles of other classic Sachtler heads, the FSB line offers no-compromise vibration dampig which is extremely subtle and finely graded in comparison to other manufacturers in the same payload range.

FSB 4: 0 to 4 kg / 0 – 9 lbs payload range

The FSB 4 fluid head is the smallest of the FSB line with a payload range of 0 to 4 kg / 0 – 9 lbs and is ideal for HDV camera users. Three horizontal and three vertical grades of drag as well as a dependable 5-step counterbalance system guarantee the camera operator optimal handling. The FSB 4 has an integrated flat-based fitting and fits tripods with 75 mm bowls.

FSB 6: 1 to 6 kg / 2 – 13 lbs payload range

The exceptionally long sliding range (120 mm / 4.7“) of the Sachtler Snap & Go sideload mechanism Snap & Go and the 10-step counterbalance, give the FSB 6 fluid head a special edge. Thus, quick and smooth counterbalance is also possible with a payload range of 1 to 6 kg / 2 – 13 lbs. The FSB 6 is ideal for using cameras that are equipped with accessories and is also alternatively offered with the Touch & Go camera plate. In addition, it has three horizontal and three vertical grades of drag plus 0.

FSB 8: 1 to 9 kg / 2 – 20 lbs payload range

With a payload range of 1 to 9 kg / 2 – 20 lbs, the FSB 8 fluid head is versatile. It has a 10-step counterbalance as well as five horizontal and vertical grades of drag plus 0. It works with the tried and tested Sachtler features, like Speedbalance and the self-illuminating Touch Bubble. The sideload technology, that extends the sliding range of the camera, is also practical. As with the FSB 6, the head is alternatively offered with the Touch & Go Plate. The FSB 6 T and FSB 8 T have parking positions for spare camera screws.

Team player: works with SOOM

Together with the SOOM multifunctional tripod system that can be used for height ranges of up to 250 cm / 98.4“ (lens height), the FSB line is a strong team for every position. The fluid heads function as a modular system with the FSB CELL, a 7.2 V rechargeable camera battery that is directly placed between the camera and the fluid head. With a high capacity of 10.5 Ah, the FSB CELL not only provides carefree shooting, but also extends the sliding range of the camera-setup. The energy-saving, compact, and dimmable Reporter LED camera light can be powered directly by the FSB CELL.

Secure position: 75 mm Tripod and Pedestal C I

In addition to SOOM, Sachtler offers three other tripods in the 75 mm range that offer impressive with stability and versatility: the lightweight Speed Lock 75 CF with quick release clamp as well as the ENG 75/2 D with two-fold extension and the DA 75 L, both with rotary clamp. Sachtler's Pedestal C I can be used in small studios and for outside broadcasting. It can be set up quickly without tools and guarantees vibration-free 'on air' movement with its smooth-running lifting column.

Accessories: adapter for FSB 6 and FSB 8

The FSB 6/8 adapter block is available for the FSB 6, FSB 6 T, FSB 8 and FSB 8 T. For mounting additional accessories, there is also the Sachtler accessory adapter with 1/4"-, M8- and 3/8“ tap holes. It can be used with fluid heads that have a viewfinder extension and an adapter block. The accessory adapter with clamping can be used to expand viewfinder extension.

Redifining camera support

Eching – Flexible, multifunctional, modular – SOOM, the multifunctional tool by Sachtler, a...

Eching – Flexible, multifunctional, modular – SOOM, the multifunctional tool by Sachtler, a Vitec Group brand, has newly defined camera support. It offers professional and semi-professional HDV users a 75 mm tripod, a monopod and a baby tripod which combine to create the SOOM HiPod system. For camera operators this means maximum flexibility for smoother day-to-day production. Matching heads, an innovative battery concept and an LED camera luminaire complement the system perfectly. The camera support system has already been recognized with awards on numerous occasions.

The SOOM basis system consists of a 75 mm tripod called the SOOM TriPod and a mid-level spreader called the SOOM TriSpread, which combine with a monopod called the SOOM Tube to create the SOOM HiPod system. The SOOM TriSpread can itself be transformed into an outstanding baby tripod with just a few easy moves. Thus the new slogan: “1+1+1=4” – intelligently combining the TriPod, TriSpread and Tube creates the SOOM HiPod system, making four products from just three.

Mike Steffl, a cameraman at the Bavarian Broadcast Corporation, has extensively tested the SOOM system. He has been fascinated by the system's unlimited possibilities: “A tripod system that offers the SOOM's range of applications has been missing on the market until now. No other tripod system offers the mid-level spreader’s brilliant second function as a removable baby tripod. Sachtler has virtually reinvented camera support.”

Flexible and reliable

The SOOM TriPod is based on Sachtler’s proven 100 mm single-extension ENG tripod and has a height range of 68.5 to 141 cm / 27 to 55.5". The SOOM TriSpread guarantees firm footing, and in its dual role as baby-tripod it also features a 75 mm head fixture and offers a height range of 20.5 to 48 cm / 8.5" to 19.3". The SOOM Tube can also stand alone as a monopod with a height range of 87 to 157 cm / 34.3 to 61.8". The intelligent combination of the TriPod, TriSpread and SOOM Tube results in the SOOM HiPod system, which telescopes to a maximum lens height of approx. 250 cm / 98.4".

SOOM offers the best prerequisites to achieve the best view at, for example, sports events, concerts or weddings, thus ensuring optimal shots from every perspective. It is also suitable for camera operators who travel alone, as the system offers a range of modules that combine to enable optimal shooting in any situation, including extreme shooting conditions. In addition, SOOM is robust, lightweight, easy to transport and absolutely reliable.

Creative and multifunctional

Camera operator Sebastian Georgi used the multifunctional tool to shoot for a fashion campaign of Hugo Boss. During the shoot experimental work, creativity and spontaneity were extremely important. And for Georgi, creativity also depends on the equipment used: “I like to get unusual takes that camera operators don’t normally shoot. Images that are blurred, concealed, reflected, distorted, greatly altered using digital processing programs, or even destroyed. The SOOM HiPod system’s multifunctionality and fast, flexible handling encourage his style of creative shooting. “The SOOM Tube allows totally new camera movements. It’s like a cross between a hand-held camera and mini-crane. We were also really impressed by the speed at which the Sachtler SOOM converts” adds Georgi.

Modular and compatible

The Sachtler FSB heads are especially suitable for the combination with SOOM: The FSB 4 to FSB 8. They wear the "works with SOOM" label, and are equipped with the FSB CELL – the innovative battery concept from Sachtler – and the Sachtler Reporter LED. Sachtler has developed a special bag for SOOM and the "works with SOOM" family: With carrying straps, wheels, and backpack straps, the equipment can also be easily transported on longer routes or rough terrain. In addition, there are pockets and holders for the heads as well as for the battery and the light.

IBC, Booth #11.F60

Eching, IBC 2010 – Sachtler, a Vitec Group brand, presents the further stage of the camera stabilizer system, the new artemis Cine HD Pro for professional film productions and digital cinematography, at the IBC. The new artemis Cine HD Pro is a completely revised system, which combines the traditional functions of the previous Cine and Cine HD systems with the modern equipment of the artemis EFP HD Special Edition. The modular concept of the artemis systems was expanded by a new 1.8" post and a matching new gimbal.

The artemis Cine HD Pro has “Dual Video Processing”, which means HD SDI and SD Video signals can be used simultaneously. For the first time, the Hot-Swap Technology, a feature that only artemis systems have, is used in the Cine product range. Thus, during a battery change electrical power is supplied continuously and there is no need to shut down the camera, monitor and radio channels. Because of the HiCap wiring the artemis Cine HD Pro, like the artemis EFP HD SE, can provide more than 200 watt for the camera. It is, therefore, also capable to supply modern digital cameras with optimal power. The HiCap wiring not only keeps the power loss extremely low (voltage drop) but, in combination with the Hot-Swap technology, also allows for a longer operating time of the battery. Thus, depending on the type of battery used, the operating time can be doubled.

ACT2 1.8" Carbon Post and matching Gimbal

Part of the new 1.8" Carbon Post is the redesigned no-tool clamping and a newly shaped twist-proof inner tube with a diameter of 1.5". Therefore, monitor brackets and already existing accessories based on 1.5” diameter can be used further on with the new post. To match the new post the new gimbal offers high precision and a fine and functional design: a new diameter, new handgrip, new joke, more control and therefore, higher precision and nicer handling. Because of the modular design of the artemis systems, also previous artemis systems can be upgraded with the new ACT2 1.8” post and the gimbal.

Hands-on at the IBC

Curt O. Schaller, who develops the artemis systems, presents the new camera stabilizer system and demonstrates its extraordinary features. The artemis Cine HD Pro can be tested by the visitors of the IBC.

Precision made in Germany

The Cine HD Pro can also be expanded with modules like all of the Sachtler artemis products. The camera stabilizer systems are developed and manufactured in Germany and convince through highest quality and precision. The new artemis Cine HD Pro will replace both artemis systems, the Cine and Cine HD, in September 2010.

Eching / Germany, NAB 2010 - German film director Marko Vucic and his team were among the first to test the new Video 20 S1 fluid head made by Sachtler with a DSLR camera shooting HD videos. The Video 20 S1 is the latest model of the ENG / EFP Video 20 head.

Marko Vucic has been working with the Canon EOS 5D Mark II. “The new Video 20 S1 combines reliable quality with new features. Together with DSLRs, the movie tube PR and the Zeiss Compact Primes CP.2, which we favour, it is a fantastic combination. However, since such a system quickly runs up a weight of 15 kg or more, it must be used with the 100 mm tripod. Only then is it possible to work efficiently and precisely with the relatively small camera, which is not optimized for filming.“ The payload of the Video 20 S1 now starts at 2 kg instead of 7 kg and ends at 25 kg.

Counterbalance increased by 4 steps

The counterbalance of the Sachtler Video 20 S1 has been increased from 4 steps up to 16 steps, providing for especially fine adjustment. Important functions for daily production include the Boost Button for a quick payload range shift, parking positions for spare camera screws, a Touch & Go plate, as well as the Sachtler Speedbalance Technology. Marko Vucic says, “Even minor technical improvements and simplified handling are worth more than gold for those working every day with this equipment.”

Booth C6025

Booth C6025

Eching / Munich, NAB 2010 – Camera stabilizing in any situation – whether at the Winter Games, soccer matches or boxing. The artemis EFP HD special edition camera stabilizer system from Sachtler, a Vitec Group brand, offers optimum functionality for camera work at sports events. The new high-capacity technology ensures an extremely long run time of both the camera and wireless systems. Thanks to Hot Swap technology, the replacement of the batteries is possible without interrupting the power supply to the camera, monitor or transmission path. Furthermore, the artemis EPF HD SE supports the processing of HD SDI video signals of up to 4.5 GHz as well as SD video signals.

With its multitude of characteristics and technical solutions, the artemis EFP HD Special Edition is perfectly adapted to modern HD cameras as well as to digital cinematography. Ideal for covering sports events, which are a particular challenge for camera teams and technology, the artemis system offers an ultra lightweight design as well as longer runtime. This is a decisive advantage, particularly when using wireless cameras. With the artemis high-capacity technology (HiCap), the operator and the OB van technicians are ensured increased reliability of the production process. As artemis developer and operator Curt O. Schaller explains: “Our new HiCap technology is based on a combination of new internal wiring and new connectors designed to maximize energy capacity of the batteries and provide an ultra low level of voltage drop, enabling extremely long runtime.”

HiCap: More than 200 Watts output
In addition to the standard outputs for camera power supply, focus power and aux power, the camera stabilizer system has a special HiCap (high-capacity) output for the camera’s power supply. The new power out socket (LEMO 2B 6 pin) was designed for the type and configuration of the RED ONE camera but can also be connected to other cameras with the new HiCap camera power cables. This enables up to 15 amps and 14.4 volts on the HiCap output, which is more than 200 Watts. The combination of the HiCap technology, Hot Swap and the new socket doubles the runtime of the camera and the accessories being used.

Voltage drop less than four percent
In the case of the RED ONE, which requires an average of 110 Watts, the EFP HD SE guarantees a voltage drop of less than four percent and the best and most efficient use of the storage batteries than was ever before possible with a camera stabilizing system. If original RED BRICK storage batteries are used, the new internal wiring allows the current battery capacity of the storage battery to be indicated on the display of the RED ONE.

Hot Swap technology: Replacement of storage battery without rebooting
Should a storage battery need to be replaced, the artemis EFP HD SE provides for a continuous power supply. “Therefore, the camera does not have to be turned off during the replacement and the transmission path to the OB vehicle is not interrupted,“ says Curt O. Schaller. “Because of the artemis Hot Swap technology, the camera operator is spared having to reboot which can save decisive seconds at sports events.“ A special electronic system from Anton/Bauer guarantees the smooth operation of the Hot Swap.

4.5 GHz HD SDI video cable
The artemis EFP HD SE supports the processing of HD SDI video signals of up to 4.5 GHz. The HD SDI video cable allows the application of high-grade HD monitors, which are state-of-the-art, like the Transvideo Cine Monitor HD 6" SBL. The operator has maximum control over his/her work with the built-in waveform monitor, the digital bubble, as well as the freely adjustable frame lines. Of course the system, as well as the monitor also enables the use of SD cameras.

Modularity, Dual Dynamic Balance and ACT2 Vest
Additional features of the Special Edition artemis EFP HD SE are:

Director's Cut

It was while working on the set that cameraman Wendelin Sachtler hit on the idea.

It was while working on the set that cameraman Wendelin Sachtler hit on the idea of developing a tripod that could cope with the problems of the equipment then in use. In the fifties, he started to construct his own tripod head that not only could be panned and tilted, but also had gyroscopic damping. Now, at last, the camera could be smoothly panned with this new damping system. This gyro head proved so popular with his fellow-cameramen that Wendelin Sachtler soon found himself producing gyro heads in series. That was the start of the Sachtler company, today a name standing for top quality in the film and video sector, constantly meeting the requirements of camera teams. Today, the daily TV news is Sachtler’s best advertising: “There is probably no TV station or location worldwide where tripods, luminaires or studio suspension systems from the biggest international manufacturer of professional camera supports are not in use”, says Heinz Kossler, CEO of Sachtler Camera Dynamics GmbH.

The recipe for success: in tune with the times

As a professional cameraman, Wendelin Sachtler kept tuned to his customers’ needs in the years that followed, producing the first hydraulic heads with lubricated oil systems in 1967. In the same year, Sachtler also launched its Touch & Go® system, now standard world-wide. This automatically locks the camera after it has been placed in position, so that all the settings remain unchanged when it is removed again. “The secret of Sachtler’s success has always been our customer-orientated thinking and acting”, says Heinz Kossler. “We detect new trends and take action ahead of our competitors – that lets us strengthen and expand Sachtler’s strong world-market position in the fields of camera support, lighting and studio planning.”

Fluid technology

Continuous developments in camera and lens technology spurred Sachtler’s designers on to make more and more innovations. In 1977, Sachtler’s legendary sealed damping system was awarded a patent. This system, while very simple, was way ahead of its time, with a completely sealed modular damping system that made it immune to external influences. First four, then seven and today nine damping stages work horizontally and vertically for complete reliability, so that every camera pan or tilt can be reproduced exactly at any time.

Camera support

With the advent of electronic cameras, Sachtler was one of the first to recognise the urgent need to build light, mobile camera support systems. In 1978, great market attention was gained by the introduction of the first ultra-light carbon fibre tripod. By the eighties, the bulk of Sachtler’s turnover was coming from the video industry, with many camera teams converting from 16 mm to electronic cameras for news reporting. In 1985, Sachtler launched the world’s first portable light pedestal. Sachtler’s lightweight construction had the invaluable advantage of being mobile, even with heavy cameras, thus ensuring smooth camera movement. In 1992, Sachtler was awarded the “technical Oscar” by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Lighting and suspension systems

Sachtler trumped its competitors in 1988 with the world premiere of a highly innovative 125 W daylight lighting system. By 1991, the company was able to feature a complete product range of daylight and tungsten luminaires. In 1992, with the production of suspension systems, Sachtler took the final step of becoming a full-service provider for studios. Since then, it has specialised in supplying turnkey studio solutions for the film and television industry.

Cranes and remote heads

In 2000, Sachtler broke into a new area in the field of camera support with the CamCrane DV and CamCrane EFP, augmented in 2005 by the Remo One remote head. In both cases, Sachtler kept to its philosophy of attending to users’ needs by equipping the CamCrane EFP with the proven Sachtler damping system – combined with the Remo One’s telescopic ability to guarantee absolutely steady pictures.

Camera stabilising systems

A move in a new direction was taken in the year 2000: together with two experienced operators, Sachtler took a decisive step forward. The artemis series, now with five machines, now represents an important source of turnover and profit for the company and will shortly be augmented by the artemis DV Pro. Consistent co-operation with experienced camera support system users opens another area of new potential. Sachtler is the only producer able to supply a complete modular series capable of expansion at any time. The artemis EFP Pro is also unique, being the only camera stabilising system that can handle 1.5 GHz, making it a real HD system.

Takeover of OConnor

It was logically consistent for Sachtler, as the market leader in the ENG sector, to take over the market leader in the film sector – OConnor, Costa Mesa, USA - in 2003, in order to expand its market share. With its revolutionary continuous counterbalance, OConnor had developed a system that fitted perfectly in Sachtler’s product portfolio. This system was used for Walt Disney productions as early as 1950. The OConnor range was expanded in 2004 to include the 1030HD and the 2060HD, specially designed to meet the needs of HD. In 2006, OConnor presented its 120EX, the flagship of its EXTENDED CAPACITY (EX) fluid head range. The patented head is based on the new EX-technology and features a new kind of stepless counterbalance system as well as a new ultra-smooth pan & tilt fluid drag designed for film-style shooting.

Made in Germany: the Sachtler Academy

In 2005, the Sachtler Academy moved into new premises at the company’s Eching site near Munich. For years, Sachtler had been running training courses and workshops for customers, business partners and staff world-wide. Originally intended as a service facility for clients and business partners, the Sachtler Academy has taken on the task of establishing new key areas when working with training establishments, and promoting a transfer of know-how between producers and users.

Sachtler’s makers

A staff of over 70 work at the company’s new head office in Eching, in development, prototype shop and administration. The world-famous Sachtler products – from fluid heads to tripods, stabilising systems, camera cranes, lighting systems, suspension systems, hoists, tracks and curtain systems – are produced in Costa Rica, Greece and the United Kingdom. All of Sachtler’s manufacturing premises, like the head office itself, are certified to ISO 9001. The sales organisation controls a world-wide distributor network, co-ordinating branches in Los Angeles, Milan, Moscow, New York, Beijing, Singapore und Tokyo.

Eching, July 2009 – Sachtler, a Vitec Group brand, announces major purchases by large television networks in Poland and Turkey. Polish TV network TVP standardizes on Sachtler for camera support.

This past spring, Polish television network TVP ordered 31 Sachtler Video 18 SB fluid heads along with Sachtler carbon fiber tripods, and three Systems 25 C III (Video 25 Plus fluid head and the C III Pedestal). TVP, with its headquarters in Warsaw as-well-as 16 local affiliates, provides eight television channels, including one in high definition. This latest order from the TVP network follows on the heels of 57 Sachtler systems purchased last year and 77 in 2007, including 56 Video 18 SB Systems. With this latest purchase, all of TVP´s studio and field production teams are equipped with Sachtler camera support equipment. Standardizing on Sachtler means that camera operators now benefit from the efficiency of using standard, interchangeable Sachtler camera support equipment. A second advantage is that the network´s maintenance personnel are experiencing lower service costs eminating from their need to keep a smaller spare parts inventory.

Professional Sachtler lights for news studios in Turkey

Ninety Sachtler Topas 220TM lighting fixtures were sold to light three news studios of a large turkish television station. The station pointed to the extremely consistent light distribution and good color rendering in purchasing the Sachtler fixtures. The Topas lighting is ideal for television studios because they draw considerably less electrical power and generate very little heat. This not only saves energy powering the lights themselves, but also has resulted in a reduced need for studio air conditioning. The Topas 220TM can be controlled via DMX, and the fluorescent tubes operate absolutely flicker-free. The Topas 220TM fixtures will be delivered with four 55W fluorescent tubes and a pole operated yoke. The Turkish station´s decision to buy Sachtler Topas lights was made on the basis of their outstanding quality, and an overall great price-benefit ratio.

artemis special edition

Eching / Las Vegas, April 2009 – Sachtler, a Vitec Group brand, introduces the artemis EFP HD SE...

NAB Booth: C6025

Eching / Las Vegas, April 2009 – Sachtler, a Vitec Group brand, introduces the artemis EFP HD SE camera stabilizing system, designed to work with the RED ONE camera. The EFP HD SE was designed and engineered in Germany, following the same philosophy as the entire artemis stabilizing line.

Two key features of the system are the 15 Amp high capacity camera power supply and the new Hot Swap technology. Because of these innovations, the artemis EFP HD SE is well-suited for pairing with the RED ONE and other state-of-the-art HD cameras. In addition to the standard 3-pin camera power out, 3-pin Aux power and 4-pin focus power out sockets, there is an extra new camera power-out, using the same Lemo 2B 6-pin socket and wiring scheme as the RED ONE. The new HiCap high capacity power supply allows the artemis EFP HD SE to handle 14V, 15 Amps, at 210 Watts, without any problem.

When the artemis EFP HD SE system is used with 14 Volts and up to 11 Amp / 154 Watts, the voltage drop is less than four percent, far superior to other brands of stabilizers. When shooting with the RED ONE camera using the RED BRICK 140WH battery pack, the operator is guaranteed maximum run time and optimum battery capacity. The voltage drop of this combination is less than four percent. Plus, battery capacity data is displayed in the eyepiece of the RED ONE when a RED BRICK or other battery supporting capacity data is used.

Modularity, Dual Dynamic Balance and HiCap Technology
Due to the modularity of the artemis EFP HD SE, the use of the 5'3" super post with an HD camera stabilizer system is no longer a problem, allowing unusual perspectives to be achieved. The patented "dual dynamic balance" of artemis systems allow mounting of two batteries at four independently adjustable positions. This unique feature offers two benefits: more than enough battery power on board, and flexible positioning of the batteries for perfect dynamic balance. According to Curt O. Schaller, inventor of the artemis, the new HiCap wiring, the use of new power-out sockets, and Hot Swap, in combination with HQ HD SDI video, are logical steps into the future of digital cinematography camera support.

Hot Swap: Permanent power supply for the camera
The artemis EFP HD SE provides camera power Hot Swap technology made by Anton/Bauer. Users are free to change the batteries of the rig without rebooting the camera. The special circuit made by Anton/Bauer takes ensures easy and problem free hot swap procedures, and is friendly to the batteries. Regardless of the camera used, this Hot Swap capability can save valuable production time.

4.5 GHz HD SDI video
The artemis EFP HD SE supports HD SDI video processing up to 4.5 GHz. Fully modular, artemis is the only stabilizing system on the market offering such versatility. The HQ HD SDI video line allows the use of the Scientific & Technical award-winning Transvideo CineMonitor HD 6" SBL. With a built-in waveform monitor, a digital bubble and free adjustable frame-lines, the operator has maximum control.

Modular and Practical
The modular artemis EFP HD SE system includes the ACT 2 vest and ACT 2 spring arm. The ACT 2 vest design features seven segments that are freely positionable in both height and width to provide the ideal fit for the operator's shoulder, chest and hip areas. "Decades of experience and a close working relationships with operators have helped us optimize carrying comfort at the body's most sensitive load-bearing points," explained Curt O. Schaller, artemis developer and a long-time operator. The ACT 2 vest's optimized fit contributes greatly to improved operation of the system and operator comfort.

The lightweight ACT 2 arm enables quick, precise and soft operation. Advanced aeronautical technologies and solutions were incorporated in developing the arm, providing load capacities from 22.6 to 53.3lbs (11 to 26kg). The new turnover mechanism of the mating block can be adapted to the preferred operating side quickly and safely. The mating block is 3mm higher than in previous versions: allowing a steeper angle adjustment. Despite this modification, the arm still fits into vests of other manufacturers and offers more adjustment possibilities including modifying the angle between the arm and the operator's body.

More information about the camera stabilizing system artemis: www.artemis-hd.com.

Eching, March 2009 – In March, Sachtler, a brand of the Vitec Group, will launch the Cine 7+7 HD fluid head, that will be available for order from NAB 2009. The Cine 7+7 HD is the only Sachtler fluid head in the 100mm field that offers typical cine features, such as a front pan bar (optional) and Sideload. Featuring a wide payload range of 2 to 22 kg (4 to 48 lbs), the new fluid head allows the use of a variety of cameras, from HDV camcorders to cameras weighing up to 22 kg (48 lbs). Plus, the Cine 7+7 HD is one of the lightest weight heads of its type so it is well-suited to location work.

The new Cine 7+7 HD fluid head is equipped with a sideload clamp for the camera plate. The 150mm long sliding range of the camera plate offers the advantage of an easy, lateral loading of the fluid head with the pre-mounted camera set-up. Like on the successful Cine 30 HD, the Cine 7+7 HD brake lever and pan bar are smartly constructed of composite material with different strengths to significantly minimize the risk of slipping, particularly during hectic productions.

Maximum versatility
With a payload of 2 to 22 kg (4 to 48 lbs), this fluid head is suitable for many HDV, HD and film production requirements.

Eching/Japan, November 2008 – Sachtler’s multifunctional SOOM has already received five awards. Now the versatile camera support tool has won the Good Design Award 2008 (GDA) in Japan. The GDA is Japan’s most important design prize and is awarded by a jury mainly made up of product, graphic and industry designers. They focus on concepts and designs that will influence the lifestyle of coming generations.

In addition to the GDA, SOOM has won important industry awards like the DV Black Diamond Award, the TV Technology Star, the Vidy Award, the Digital Content Producer Pick Hit as well as 4EVER Group’s Product Innovation Award.

Eching, October 2008 – This year, the Wendelin Sachtler Academy offers again two workshops on creative professional lighting: both courses take place at the Academy Studio in Eching – „Advanced Professional Lighting" from 27 to 31 October and „Basics of Professional Lighting” from 25 to 28 November. The German cameraman and lecturer Leo W. Borchard will conduct the seminars, in which qualified support and useful know-how on creative lighting will be conveyed.

Based on their knowledge, participants can either attend „Basics of Professional Lighting" or „Advanced Professional Lighting". The filmmakers learn to deal with professional lighting equipment step-by-step: from the safe use of the equipment up to the optimum use of all product properties. After completion of the theoretical part on the basics of creative lighting, the technology of the lamps as well as photometry and colorimetry, the acquired knowledge can be put into action immediately in numerous practical exercises – inside the studio and outdoors. The light conditions continuously present new challenges at different times of the day and night.

A certificate as a sign of quality
These workshops’ focus will be on evaluating types of lighting and techniques, as well as hands-on experiences with different light sources. One important factor is that experiences can be exchanged with participants of various branches, who also attend the seminar. Seminar manager Leo W. Borchard states that "Within a short time a study-group is developing – a team that decisively completes practical basic tests, learns to master photographic styles, and illuminates and creates complex documentary and scenic sets“. All participants will receive a certificate of the Wendelin Sachtler Academy at the end of the workshop, stating the covered topics.

The cost for the workshop „Basics of Professional Lighting" is 830.00 € (plus VAT) and 890.00 € (plus VAT) for the research seminar „Advanced Professional Lighting".

You will find additional information about the Wendelin Sachtler Academy, current events and workshops at www.sachtler-academy.com.

This spring, Sachtler also supported BaanGerda project, which offers a new home to HIV infected orphans in Thailand. For this project, a documentary was filmed using Sachtler equipment. "Every company has a social responsibility", says Sandra Rademacher, marketing assistant for Sachtler, "we are conscious of this and therefore carefully select and sponsor different organizations."

Cooperation with film universities
Sachtler shows it is also socially engaged, by concerning itself with the promotion of young people from the film industry.

Sachtler, a Vitec Group brand, introduces its first LED on-camera light: Reporter 8LED. This compact, powerful new light fixture requires the power input of just 8 watts yet produces a light output of 250 lumens.

This new luminaire is designed to offer all the advantages of the latest LED technology. Professionals will enjoy the benefits of the low-energy consumption, the exceptionally long lifetime of the LED, and a remarkably low failure rate. The unit’s minimal heat generation allows it to be set up extremely close to the object being filmed. With an input voltage range of 6 to 24 volts, the fixture is ideally suited for work with everything from compact 7.2 volt HDV camcorders to popular broadcast cameras, and in various applications such as in a car.

The Sachtler Reporter 8LED is available in a standard daylight version. However, an exchangeable LED module makes it a simple matter to convert the fixture to a tungsten light. Operators can also make quick, tool-free adjustments of the beam angle by replacing the lens module. The unit’s rotatable 4-leaf barndoor frame detaches easily through its quick-release mechanism, allowing for fast and easy lens changes.

Reporter 8LED has been engineered and constructed with a special emphasis on durability, compactness and flexibility. Its rigid, waterproof aluminum housing is designed for both long life and to enable work in extreme shooting situations. The unit measures just 3.15" (8cm) long, with a cross-section (without barndoors) of 2.4" x 2.4" (5.2 x 5.2 cm) and a total weight of under 0.9 lbs (0.4 kg) – making it an unobtrusive addition to day-to-day mobile production.
The luminaire’s double-jointed extension arm with camera shoe or 1/4" threaded screw allows for various mounting options either on or off camera. Three different accessory sets provide users with a wide range of lighting design solutions and configuration possibilities.

For further information, please visit: www.sachtler.us.

New SACHTLER ARTEMIS Vest and Arm Upgrade Allow for Operating Lighter & Longer

Sachtler adds two more innovations to the artemis line of professional camera stabilization...

Sachtler adds two more innovations to the artemis line of professional camera stabilization systems. The ACT 2 C Carbon Fiber Spring Arm Upgrade turns the artemis ACT 2 arm into the world's first carbon fiber spring arm. Plus the new ACT 2 Vest provides a host of advances to promote comfort, fit and versatility for camera stabilizing systems including the artemis EFP, EFP Pro SDI HD, Cine, and Cine HD.

Working in collaboration with racecar industry experts, Sachtler's engineers developed the Carbon Fiber Upgrade for the artemis ACT 2 standard aluminum spring arm. For this upgrade, the ACT 2 Arm’s aluminum skeleton or “bones” are replaced by new carbon fiber components. Carbon fiber’s lightweight and outstanding torsional strength make the ACT 2 C Upgrade an asset for lengthy or fast-paced shoots.

Like the standard ACT 2 aluminium model, the upgrade retains the torsion-free design and features three, quick-to-change spring sets that handle payloads from 24-57 lbs/11-26 kg.

When combined with the new artemis ACT 2 Vest, operation of the camera stabilizing system is optimized. The ergonomically-designed ACT 2 Vest provides a brilliant new padding system to facilitate a comfortable fit for any body type. It features six moveable pads that may be custom positioned to prevent pressure points and promote even weight distribution. To enhance wearability, the pads are smartly designed with a soft wicking core and covered with top grade nylon Cordura so the operator stays dry throughout the shoot. Furthermore, ACT 2 pads are easy to remove for washing.

The Vest’s new memory-fasteners located at the chest and hip straps enable quick & easy adjustment. During shooting breaks, the entire Vest can be loosened with a simple flick of the wrist, then easily refastened so that the belts return to their preset positions. Thanks to the memory-fasteners, the Act 2 Vest “remembers” the fit and again suits the operator's body perfectly--no readjustments are necessary.

The new ACT 2 Vest and ACT 2 C Arm feature industry standard connections for compatibility with systems by Sachtler and other popular makes. The development, production and assembly of artemis products take place at the Sachtler headquarters in Munich, Germany.
Sachtler Academy web pages for Arabs

The Sachtler Academy, well-known within the media industry for its workshops on professional...

The Sachtler Academy, well-known within the media industry for its workshops on professional lighting and camera operation, has now launched an Internet site specifically aimed at the film and TV branches in the Middle East. Visitors under www.sachtler-academy.com can find web pages brimming with information and offers of particular interest to Arab customers.

Eching, 29 May 2007 – For the Sachtler Academy, the CABSAT congress was a huge success. The academy introduced its multi-facetted workshop program there, attracting great interest from Arab visitors. The positive response has now led the academy to expand its engagement – into the virtual world of the Middle East. A website specifically designed for Arab Internet users under www.sachtler-academy.com provides detailed information about our workshop program. “Our Academy workshops have uncovered a gap in the market. We have never before seen such outstanding workshop opportunities within the Arab world. Sachtler is now in the process of gaining a presence in Dubai, and our workshops will enable us to establish the Academy there. Our websites are an initial step that provides Arabs interested in our workshops with information about the Academy,” explains Marion Ahrensfeld, who is in charge at the Academy.

Academy in Arabic
As soon as they open the Academy’s home page, the Academy logo welcomes visitors in Arabic. Without delay, users are linked to the Arab website, where they can find the contact details of Ahmad Nana’a, their contact person in the Arab world. The workshop program is available as a download in both Arabic and English. Visitors to the website can also answer an online questionnaire in Arabic that asks media representatives for their expectations with regards to seminar content. This enables Academy organizers to gauge what Arab media representatives want from our workshops, allowing us to conceive training seminars that target participants’ interests.

Cooperation with a future
Our discussions with studio operators and dealers have shown that they are extremely interested in cooperation. The first cooperative projects and partnerships have already begun, and the first workshops are soon to take place. “The web pages in the Internet are a further step towards intensifying our cooperation with our Arab friends and colleagues. These days every professional in the world realizes that the only way to stay ahead of competition is to constantly keep up with the latest technical and technological innovations and trends. A smooth exchange of information with colleagues is crucial to this, making the Academy’s web pages the perfect platform,” adds Marion Ahrensfeld.

Those with rhythm in their bones will have an advantage at the first ever Camera Stabilizing...

Those with rhythm in their bones will have an advantage at the first ever Camera Stabilizing Systems Workshop in Russia. That’s because the camera stabilizing system only really starts to flow like a dancer when the operator learns how to lead it like one: calmly and with full concentration.

ECHING, 24.05.07 – For the very first time, Sachtler, Camera Dynamics GmbH and its partner D&K are organizing a combined artemis Camera Stabilizing Systems Workshop in Russia. Participants at the five-day
workshop – which runs from 1–5 October, 2007 – will be trained in both the theory and practice of the artemis systems. One of the Sachtler Academy’s key priorities is to convey practical know-how that can be directly applied to the reality of day-to-day shooting.

A comprehensive introduction to the equipment starts things rolling: Nothing is left out – from the compact DV Pro rigs right up to the Cine HD Systems. Under the direction of professional cameramen Curt O. Schaller (Germany) and Igor Wotintsew (Russia), workshop participants will learn a host of tips and tricks that will allow them to nurture stunning pictures through expert camera operation. How to professionally adjust the rig, vest and spring arm is an essential part of the workshop program as is the Fundamental Physics that needs to be considered during a shoot with a camera stabilizing system.

Those taking part in practical exercises to develop guidance techniques and footwork will require a good deal of concentration and calm camera operation. The participants will soon realize which skills they need to hone in order to perfect their shooting. The operation of camera stabilizing systems is rapidly increasing on sets all
over the world. The Sachtler Academy has responded by offering its artemis Camera Stabilizing Systems Workshops worldwide, employing professional lecturers and top-class equipment to impart the necessary know-how with regard to technical innovation. See www.sachtler-academy.com for more information about the Moscow workshop, including registration opportunities.

ECHING, May 2007 - Sachtler proudly presented the FSB 2 and FSB 6 fluid heads at NAB where they received three prestigious awards: the TV Technology Star Award, the Videography Vidy Award and the DV Black Diamond Award (FSB 6). The design of the new F-series Series heads for MiniDV and HDV camcorders is based on the SPEEDBALANCE technology (SB) used on Sachtler´s renowned larger fluid head systems.

The new FSB 2 and FSB 6 fluid heads are the first on the market to support payloads from 0 to 2 kg/0 to 4.4 lbs (FSB 2) and 1 to 6 kg/2.2 to 13.2 lbs (FSB 6) and feature the Sachtler sideload Snap & Go mechanism. In addition, the FSB 6 is the only head in its range to feature 10-step counterbalance, while the FSB 2 offers a 2-step counterbalance setting of 0 and 1.

The heads provide three dampening steps in both pan and tilt directions, as well as a zero setting, which deactivates dampening. The FSB 6 is available with either a Snap & Go sideload S plate or with the classic Touch & Go camera plate. The Snap & Go sideload technology offers an ample 120mm/4.7'' sliding range, allowing the operator to center the camera systemís c.g. on the head. Sachtler´s design team made no compromises and employed many of the same award-winning engineering principles of the larger heads when developing the FSB 2 and FSB 6.

The right combo: FSB 2 / FSB 6 and FSB CELL
When combined with Sachtlerís revolutionary new FSB CELL the fluid heads become real powerhouses. This 10.5 AH lithium rechargeable camera battery, which fits directly below the camera, provides 8 hours of shooting time, ensuring maximal flexibility on the set. In addition, FSB CELL incorporates the Sachtler Snap & Go camera attachment system into its top and bottom surfaces for sure and easy connection between the camera and FSB 2 or FSB 6. When teamed with the FSB CELL, the sliding range of the camera set-up is extended even further to 225mm/8.6" for optimal balance.

The new heads will be launched in Europe at the IBC in September.
New Generation

ECHING, NAB 2007 – Sachtler, a Vitec Group brand, launches the FSB CELL, a new concept in battery...

ECHING, NAB 2007 – Sachtler, a Vitec Group brand, launches the FSB CELL, a new concept in battery design. The FSB CELL is engineered to supply all-day (8-hour) power to new generation compact DV and HDV camcorders while simultaneously adding ballast weight to the camera when tripod mounted or handheld.

FSB CELL is a powerful 7.2 Volt lithium ion rechargeable battery that fits directly below the camcorder. When used with Sachtler’s new FSB 2 or FSB 6 fluid heads, a stabilizer system or hand-held, it adds a carefully positioned 1.4 lb. (0.65kg) mass facilitating smooth pans and tilts that may otherwise be challenging with lightweight camcorders.

FSB CELL measures 7.1” x 3.5” x 1.8” (18cm x 9cm x 4.5cm). It incorporates the Sachtler Snap & Go camera attachment system into its top and bottom surfaces for sure and easy connection between the camcorder and Sachtler fluid head. Thus the operator can quickly convert from tripod mount to hand-held use.

To facilitate optimum balance, the FSB CELL offers a sliding range that expands to 225mm. The FSB CELL is compatible with popular lightweight camcorders from Sony, Canon and Panasonic via optional adapter cables. The system comes complete with the global FSB CELL charger (90 – 250 VAC 50/60 Hz input).

The product is available through the Sachtler dealer network beginning July 2007. Operators will also appreciate that the arm support is fully reversible for operation on either left or right side of the body.

The DV Pro FX has been modularly designed for ultimate flexibility and easy upgrade to the more feature-packed artemis DV Pro MD. “The philosophy of artemis is modularity,” said Ali Ahmadi, Product and Marketing Manager for Sachtler products for the Americas. “It’s a big advantage because rather than investing in a whole new rig, an operator can simply upgrade, as their business grows.”

The development, production and assembly of all Sachtler artemis systems are carried out at the company’s headquarters near Munich, Germany. The company expects the DV Pro FX system to retail under $6500. Deliveries are slated for May, 2007. The product is available through the Sachtler dealer network.
ECHING, NAB 2007 – Sachtler, a Vitec Group brand, introduces the ACT 2 spring arm for camera...

ECHING, NAB 2007 – Sachtler, a Vitec Group brand, introduces the ACT 2 spring arm for camera stabilizing systems (with industry-standard vest/arm connection) including the artemis EFP, EFP Pro SDI HD, Cine, and Cine HD. The elegantly engineered ACT 2 delivers breakthrough functionality, easy set-up and enhanced performance in a surprisingly lightweight yet robust package.

Sachtler’s engineering team has carefully thought out this next generation arm, improving the state of the art with new-technology springs, bearings and materials like high rigidity reinforced aluminum. The result is an arm that is 3 lbs. lighter to carry yet offers unmatched torsional strength to benefit daily operations and ensure a long life.

The ACT 2 is designed for versatile, speedy set-up. A choice of three interchangeable stainless steel spring sets handle payloads from 24 to 57 lbs. (11-26 kg). The intuitive pre-tensioning capability lets the operator adjust spring tension to accommodate various loads simply and quickly with a single 5/32” (4mm) Allen wrench. Operators will appreciate that when it’s time for action, the arm fully-engages at once, even at maximum load.

The new arm also introduces a flip-over vest attachment that makes it easy to switch from “right-handed” to “left-handed” operation and vice-versa, without disassembling the vest connection. The 5/8” gimbal mounting post, available in 6”, 10” and 12” lengths, offers adjustable friction.

This arm is built for durability, right down to the finish. While most arms rely on anodized aluminum, the ACT 2 housing undergoes a unique chemical process that hardens the aluminum and produces a smooth finish that repels scratches and nicks and sports a deep long lasting black matte color.

The ACT 2 arm is crafted in Eching, Germany alongside Sachtler’s other precision artemis products and is available through the Sachtler dealer network beginning May 2007.
ECHING, NAB 2007 – Sachtler products have been produced in Costa Rica since 1985. Having started...

ECHING, NAB 2007 – Sachtler products have been produced in Costa Rica since 1985. Having started with a staff of fifteen in Cartago, a suburb of San José, the site has grown into a factory today employing around 100 people. Since its expansion in February 2007, a total of four machining centres with double spindles, various tool magazines, horizontal and vertical machining centres are in use at the 3,000 square metre site, in order to handle the total production of this and two other brands in the Vitec Group.

Synergy effects on the German and Costa Rican side
The location in a tax-free zone allows Sachtler to produce high quality products at competitive prices in all product areas. “In order to ensure that our customers enjoy their accustomed Sachtler quality, production in Costa Rica is carried out at the most modern level” says CEO Heinz Kossler. “Our development engineers in Munich and production engineers in Costa Rica are constantly in contact. The latest requirements are discussed and implemented at regular information exchange sessions. Naturally, there are also reciprocal visits and comprehensive documentation.” There is a strong awareness of the high standards required on both sides, with customers relying on the well-trained staff in the Vitec Group worldwide.

Suppliers produce to Sachtler standard
Not just the business and Sachtler benefit from having production in Costa Rica. In the past eight years, production there has also boosted growth in the supply industry: “The systems used in industrial production, such as machining, rubber processing and plastic injection moulding, have been constantly developed and were based on our strict quality requirements right from the start,” says local CEO Julio Lizano. “Suppliers here produce to Sachtler’s own standard, enabling us supply top quality at all times.”

Full production by 2008
With the new machines installed, full production is expected by 2008, Heinz Kossler and Julio Lizano are looking expectantly to the future: “The combination of German ingenuity and Costa Rican productive efficiency has paid off in full measure,” they said, “giving ample scope for more products featuring Sachtler’s traditional standards: security, reliability and robustness.”

Eching, Germany, September 2006 – Sachtler’s new C III Pedestal is set to its European premiere at IBC 2006. A key reason why this pedestal stands out is the time it saves setting up. The fluid head is mounted in a matter of seconds, and the lifting column is quick and easy to fix to the dolly due to its excenter clamps. When the shooting is over it is just as quickly disassembled for transport.

The operator can check for correct air pressure in the column with a simple glance at the built-in pressure gauge, which is also very useful when the column is being air charged with the pump. Additional features of the new C III Pedestal include the exceptionally robust dolly and a steering ring.

The pedestal’s technical specifications and comfortable handling are largely similar to the existing, highly successful C II model. The C III Pedestal is available for delivery and is also available in a system package with the Video 15 SB fluid head and the Video 25 Plus FB.

Expertise on the set

Eching. Sachtler, the world’s leading supplier of equipment for the film and TV business, presents...

Eching. Sachtler, the world’s leading supplier of equipment for the film and TV business, presents its complete range of camera support systems. At the heart of this product range are the so-called fluid heads. These tripod heads can be adjusted individually for any camera. Together with the matching tripods, stabilising systems and camera cranes, they provide the best-possible stability in operation. Thanks to their intelligent, sturdy construction, all Sachtler products are extremely robust, flexible in use and easy to operate.

Light, yet extra-stable camera support systems are a must for professional work on the set. Whether in the studio or under extreme conditions – at 40 below zero in Alaska or sixty Celsius in the Sahara (-40/+140° Fahrenheit) – the camera must be as flexible as possible in use, so that even exceptional settings can be used. Stability can only be guaranteed by the perfect alignment of all components that have to work like a clock over many years of professional use.

Key components: fluid heads in use

Sachtler fluid heads are absolutely reliable in use: “Extreme temperatures have no affect on how our fluid heads work or on their durability”, says Robert Zierer, Sachtler’s Product Manager ENG. ”They work smoothly, contain no hydraulic oil that will gum up (resinify), and so are completely immune to external influences.” Even under exceptional conditions, the Sachtler heads are easy to use: “Camera operators no longer have to turn the fluid head back and forwards to find the point of balance, but can get a perfect setting with a finely-tuned counterbalance system”, says Zierer, explaining the niceties of the heads. Further advantages of the Sachtler fluid heads are that they can be accurately re-positioned, with quick setting of damping and counterbalance, the so-called SPEEDBALANCE. Whether it’s a MiniDV camcorder weighing only a few hundred grams, or a heavy film and studio camera weighing in at well over 50 kilos (110 lbs), Sachtler has a suitable fluid head for every model.

The key figure showing the load-bearing capacity of a fluid head is the so-called centre-of-gravity height (COG) of the camera assembly on the fluid head. It gives the dimension between the centre of gravity of the camera and the upper level of the fluid head used. The smaller the figure, the greater the camera weight can be.
All Sachtler’s fluid heads are suitable for use with high definition (HD) cameras. Some products are specially geared to the working habits of classic film camera operators, with the operating elements put in their usual places. Many proven film camera features have also been integrated for cinematography camcorders, such as an adapter for the viewfinder extension or the front box.

Standing steady on your own three feet

However, a fluid head can only perform at its best when matched with a suitable tripod or pedestal. For 47 years, Sachtler tripods have proven their worth all over the world, with their no-compromise light-weight construction and extreme rigidity. Sachtler uses dural aluminium (DA) and carbon fibre (CF) for its tripods and pedestals. Both feature extreme load-bearing capacity and resistance to fracture, even under extreme conditions. Carbon fibre also has decisive advantages over the cheaper aluminium. It weighs considerably less, making it ideal for mobile use and it is more pleasant to the touch at extreme temperatures. For even greater stability, Sachtler features its HD tripods (heavy duty). The Hot Pod® gives film and TV professionals the world’s fastest ENG (electronic news gathering) tripod system in carbon fibre.

Head and shoulders: the perfect connection

The right connection for the fluid heads depends on the load to be carried. Light MiniDV cams only need a 75 mm bowl, while digital camcorders need a 100 mm bowl and heavy film and TV cameras are best placed on tripods with a 150 mm bowl. Studio pedestals and OB tripods are equipped with a flat base fitting for the appropriate fluid heads. Individual tripods may also be fitted with adaptors for other applications.

Stability and mobility: tripods

Simple extending tripods usually have a twist fitting that locks the leg at the required extension in seconds. Double extension tripods with Sachtler quick clamping system are locked immediately by reversing a lever. The patented SpeedLock® clamping system is even more convenient in use with double extension tripods: both locks on the tripod’s legs are released in a flash, using only one quick-action lever.

Pedestals: easy to manoeuvre

Sachtler’s studio pedestals make life a lot easier for camera operators. The Quickfix attachment makes for speedy head changing. The wheel positions can be seen at all times and all three wheel brakes can be operated in every position. The crab-and-steer function enables simple manoeuvring with defined rolling turns, while the surfaces are rubber-coated to push the unit with your foot. For the safety of the camera team, the lead weights for the column are coated in plastic.

Camera stabilising systems: artemis – Sachtler’s crossover machine

The camera stabilising systems in Sachtler’s artemis range feature a modular system for ease of expansion. The systems are designed as so-called crossover machines. The range thus covers all the requirements of film, TV and high definition operation. Sachtler designed the artemis EFP Pro SDI HD specially for the new generation of HD cameras with SDI interface. This rig uses a patented cable system for reliable transfer of high data levels. The artemis EFP entry-level system has been designed for use with video cameras, camcorders and 16 mm cameras and features Sachtler’s widely-used Touch & Go® quick-locking system. If required, this EFP system can be up-graded to an artemis Cine HD. For detailed information, see: www.artemis-hd.com.

Camera cranes: perfect damping

In 2002, Sachtler expanded its product range to include the CamCrane DV and CamCrane EFP lightweight cranes. The CamCrane EFP was designed for extra low vibration, to ensure good recording quality. Damping packages, which had proved themselves over many years in Sachtler fluid heads, were also used for the crane. Its unrivalled three-stage damping reduces the crane’s vibration to a minimum. The CamCrane EFP can be run out to various lengths, up to a maximum of 6.5 m (22 ft). The crane can be used for parallel, top and bottom views. It comes with the proven Touch & Go® camera plate. The camera can be put in place for an immediate switch between crane and tripod. The camera selected can be quickly balanced, using the sliding plate. With its low weight and compact dimensions, the crane is ideal for mobile use.

Remo One remote head: flexible in use

The “Remo One” remote head weighs only around six kilos (13.2 lbs). Yet it has a load-bearing capacity of up to 13 kilos (28.7 lbs) for film and video cameras. Its joystick operation make starting and stopping smooth and easy. Its intelligent electronics count how often the head swivels and warn the operator of any likely damage to the cable. It has an external control box where speed, direction and damping can be pre-selected for the remote head. The Remo One was designed to be extra flexible in use. As well as its classic “suspended” fitting from the CamCrane EFP, it can also be used in a standing position, e.g. on a Sachtler
OB 2000 tripod.

Co-operation is the motor behind innovation

Sachtler has had a long tradition of co-operating closely with filmmakers in designing new products – after all, the founder was himself a cameraman. The result of various co-operative activities in the camera support area have been not just product novelties, but the revision and development of proven products. ”Our philosophy is to design products that are light, sturdy and well-finished, easy to operate, with an above-average working life”, says Robert Zierer. The company’s objective is to put a perfect instrument in the camera operator’s hands, to set your ideas in motion!

Eching. Sachtler, the world’s leading supplier of equipment for the film and TV business, presents...

ECHING – Sachtler, the world’s leading supplier of equipment for the film and TV business, presents an ideally graded range of reporter luminaires for daylight and tungsten lighting, either plug-in or with rechargeable batte-ries, depending on the wattage and location. All are highly mobile, easy to use and completely silent in operation. Their sturdy, reliably-finished mate-rials can be used even under extreme conditions, ensuring an above-average working life for Sachtler luminaires.
Although the sensitivity of cameras has increased, particularly in the digital sec-tor, additional sources of light are still indispensable. The quality of an interview or feature depends on having the best possible lighting. So Sachtler features a finely-graded range of light, sturdy reporter luminaires for daylight or tungsten light, from 8 to 1,000 watts, to meet special requirements on location. That means mobility and independence for camera teams, who can film their contributions quickly and get on the air sooner.

The right light for every setting
All the luminaires in Sachtler’s portfolio are easy and efficient in use, with high light output. The company uses polyphenylensulfide (PPS), a special material comparable with carbon fibre. Its low specific weight makes the luminaires extra light and resistant to pressure, shock and impact. The material is also UV-proof and exceptionally stable at extreme temperatures. These specific properties give Sachtler’s camera lights an above-average working life. And thanks to their low thermal conductivity, nobody will get their fingers burnt when adjusting or remo-ving the lighting, even after a long period of operation. Another great advantage of these high-quality lights is their silent operation.

Optimum light output
Constant developments in reflectors and casings ensure that the light is directed to the point where it is needed, without any loss of intensity or irritating diffusion. Compared with similar products, the Sachtler luminaires are known and apprecia-ted for their high light output with the same power input. Even under extremes of climate, the sturdy luminaires work reliably, as they are protected against damp. Many daylight luminaires have been designed principally for use on stands, e.g. the mains-powered Reporter 1000H or the Reporter 400D daylight unit. Others, like the powerful Reporter 250H, have a carrying handle for mobile use or can be placed on the tripod or on the camera. Others are only designed as on-board light, e.g. the Reporter 75H.

Reporter 75H: the camera light
The Reporter 75H is extra popular for its extreme versatility. Its secret lies in its powerbase, which can be supplied with an optional dimmer. Before shooting, the powerbase is fitted to the camera shoe and connected to the camera’s rechar-geable battery source, so that the camera light can also be used ad hoc. The Re-porter 75H can be fitted with bulbs from 20 to 75 watts, making it extra versatile.

Sachtler’s first LED luminaire
The Reporter 8LED, Sachtler’s newest lighting product and first-ever LED lumi-naire, offers the most innovative lighting technology on the market. Due to its in-put voltage of 6 to 24 volts it is ideal for operation with both small 7.2 volt (H)DV cameras, and commonly-used broadcast camcorders. This extremely efficient luminaire delivers light output of 250 lumens for an input power of just 8 watts.

Like all Sachtler lighting, the Reporter 8LED stands out for its robustness, com-pactness and flexibility. The luminaire has a length of just 80 mm / 3.15“, average size of 52 x 52 mm / 2.05“ and total weight of less than 400 grams / 0.9 lb. Its sealed, water resistant housing ensures that the luminaire is fit to film reports, interviews and documentaries – no matter what the weather is like. The luminaire is available as a daylight version, but can be converted to tungsten light using an exchangeable LED module. In addition, annoying, distorted shadows are avoided because the Reporter 8LED only has one LED module. Finally, the Reporter 8LED’s accessory set expands the luminaire’s creative potential and the number of applications for which it can be used.

Discussion forum and platform for know-how transfer

July 2005 – The big opening ceremony at Sachtler’s open house event 2005: the Sachtler Academy...

Eching. The big opening ceremony at Sachtler’s open house event 2005: the Sachtler Academy moves into its own studio on the company’s premises in Eching, near Munich. Since then, numerous international workshops and training sessions have taken place at the Sachtler Academy, a forum where professionals and newcomers can exchange know-how and experience. The workshops range from basic to advanced courses, with camera stabilizing systems, professional lighting and, for example, workshops on the subject of HD. Moreover, the Academy has taken the game to the players: at the end of 2006, the first workshop took place in the USA and courses are planned in Ascona and Dubai for 2007.

“Technical innovation is always linked with a gain in know-how that needs to be passed on,” says Heinz Kossler, CEO of Sachtler Camera Dynamics GmbH, explaining how the Sachtler Academy came into being. However, this original service concept has developed into an institution that has become an important address for customers and users when know-how transfer and practical experience are in demand.

Encouraging the newcomers

A wide range of workshops and training sessions are featured at the generously-sized studio rooms. In co-operation with partners from the worlds of camera, film and television technology, the Sachtler Academy also runs workshops involving more than one manufacturer, so that new paths may be taken together. ”The Sachtler Academy has developed into a platform for all those who want to play a part in shaping the future of the film business, whether manufacturers, camera operators, studio professionals or students. We are particularly interested in encouraging young talent in the film and TV world, working closely with colleges and academies for media, film and television,” says Marion Ahrensfeld, who is responsible for the Sachtler Academy. Above all, insights are given into the technology and systems used for video, film and studio work.

The Sachtler Academy is open to everyone who wants to gain know-how, share his or her knowledge and exchange experience with colleagues in the business. ”We want to do more than just pass on our know-how: we want to learn, too. The feed-back we get on what our customers and partners need is channelled directly back into our technical innovations,” stresses Heinz Kossler.
Perfect camera balance

Eching, Germany, September 2006 – Sachtler’s most recent addition to the artemis family, the DV Pro...

The artemis DV Pro is specially designed for professional MiniDV and (H)DV cameras, and offers the same excellence as the larger
artemis EFP, artemis EFP Pro, artemis Cine and artemis Cine HD systems. Functionality and quality are the foremost priorities. Curt Schaller, developer of the system and himself a camera operator, comments: “Lightweight cameras are increasingly used in film and TV productions because of growing cost pressures. For this reason, professional operators should be able to benefit from the same technical features they expect from larger stabilizing systems.”

Today, ENG is becoming increasingly competitive, with growing demands for precision, speed and image diversity and – at the same time – lower production costs. Here, the artemis DV Pro offers a host of features that make all of this possible:

Optimized dimensions and lightweight construction

Compact modular design (the system is completely dismountable and can later be upgraded with more advanced modules)

No-tool adjustment of the side-to-side-module

No-tool telescopic center post

No-tool self-centering, high-precision gimbal

No-tool monitor bracket that holds a 7" (17.8 cm) 16:9 4:3, Pal/NTSC TFT Monitor

No-tool lower sled with finely adjustable dynamic balance

12V and 24V operation, HD RGB and HD SDI signal processing all possible

Battery bracket for Anton/Bauer, PAG and Sony V-Mount

Back-mounted vest

Spring arm with exchangeable spring sets for cameras from 1.5 to 9.5 kg (3.3 to 20.9 lb)

With all these features, the artemis DV Pro perfectly complements the rest of the artemis range, which includes:

artemis EFP – the broadcast system for EFP and ENG operators who use SD video cameras and 16 mm film cameras. Its modular construction means the system can be upgraded right up to the artemis Cine HD.

artemis EFP Pro HD SDI – the universal cross-over system for modern day-to-day production. This system enables direct switching of all common HD RGB, HD SDI (up to 3 GHz) and SD signals to the moni-tor. In addition,
12 V / 24 V switching enables applications that include film

cameras to be used with this system.

artemis Cine – the classic system for all film and SD video applications satisfies all production

demands and camera operator requirements.

artemis Cine HD – the state-of-the-art system that features all the functions of the Cine version, in addition to patented internal HD (RGB) wiring and switching.

All models within the artemis family also offer the following unbeatable advantages: they feature modular construction and metric dimensions, are upgradable and therefore future-proof, are fully compatible with
all popular American products and – last but not least – are “Made in Germany”!

Director II Universal HMI

Eching, Germany, September 2006 – The Director II Universal HMI luminaire family has just grown by...

Eching, Germany, September 2006 – The Director II Universal HMI luminaire family has just grown by two! The new 1,200 W luminaires offer all the advantages of the existing 575 W models. They feature latest generation electronic ballast units, an innovation that enables the electronics to be easily integrated in the luminaire. Under normal operating conditions, the ballast unit operates without forced ventilation. In extreme atmospheric applications, however, a ventilator can be manually switched on to ensure adequate air flow.

The ballast unit operates with a frequency of 300 kHz. This results in a luminaire that is absolutely silent, and also provides flicker-free light that can be used for all kinds of production applications. Benefits provided by the ClearArc© technology used include an approximately 20 % longer lamp life and higher light output by
preventing deposits on the inside of the lamp bulb. The built-in ballast unit results in a compact and highly mobile luminaire that no longer requires a heavy extension.
The luminaires can also be optionally fitted with a DMX–interface with which they can be switched on or off, or dimmed from 100–50 %.

The Director II Universal HMI is available as either a fresnel lens luminaire or a PAR luminaire (including a lens kit), and in wattages of either 575 W or 1,200 W – making a total of four different versions on the market now.

Cine 30 HD with innovative sideload technology

Eching, Germany, September 2006 – The new Sachtler fluid head Cine 30 HD comes with a sideload...

Eching, Germany, September 2006 – The new Sachtler fluid head Cine 30 HD comes with a sideload clamping mechanism for the camera plate. This technology not only increases the camera plate’s sliding range; it also enables easy side loading of the fluid head with its pre-mounted camera set-up. The mechanism is compatible with camera plates from the great majority of popular manufacturers, including those from OConnor and the ARRI Bridgeplate. The head’s control elements, including the brake lever or pan bar, have been newly designed, with a host of benefits to the operator. Manufactured in a 2K process from a variety of hard plastics, the elements are now exceptionally handy. This significantly reduces the danger of skidding or slipping, especially in the often hectic production business.

The fluid head, which weighs 6 kg / 13.2 lb and has a payload range of 3 to 35 kg / 6.6 to 77.2 lb, is perfect for almost all HD and film production demands. Fast and reliable camera balancing is ensured using Sachtler’s proven step-switching – the Cine 30 HD itself offering 18-step counterbalance. In addition, the payload range can be switched between “High” and “Low” using a boost button. According to the camera’s weight, operators can employ seven horizontal and seven vertical grades of drag (plus the obligatory “0”) to enable smooth, jerk-free panning. And to top it all off, the head features a tilt range of +90° to -75°. The Cine 30 HD also comes in two complete system packages with different tripods.

Way ahead with the new Cine tripods

Eching, Germany, September 2006 – Sachtler’s new Cine tripod, which comes in long and medium...

Eching, Germany, September 2006 – Sachtler’s new Cine tripod, which comes in long and medium versions, will celebrate its European premiere at IBC 2006. Sachtler sees in the tripod a worthy successor to its popular Cine 2000. The Cine’s innovative construction features are sure to satisfy operators’ demands for heavy duty tripods in film and HD applications. The Cine 150 long has a maximum height of 176 cm / 69.3", while the Cine 150 medium can reach a maximum of 88 cm / 34.6".

The clamps used to fix the tripod legs’ heights are now considerably larger and easier to use. This is especially practical in icy temperatures, where operators can now loosen and tighten the clamps easily without removing their gloves. Significantly larger spikes further improve tripod stability on uneven and/or soft ground. In addition the tripod legs’ stiffness can be set – tool-free – using levers at the tripod. A spreader and mid-level spreader as well as the Dolly Cine are available as optional accessories.

Speedbalance for first class operation!

Eching, Germany, September 2006 – With the new Video 18 SB and Video 20 SB fluid heads, Sachtler...

Eching, Germany, September 2006 – With the new Video 18 SB and Video 20 SB fluid heads, Sachtler has further expanded its SPEEDBALANCE generation in the run up to IBC 2006. Now the latest technology is also available to heavier ENG cameras. The new heads offer significantly finer counterbalance graduation. While the Video 18 SB features 10-step counterbalance and a payload of up to 18 kg
(40 lb), the Video 20 SB offers 12-step counterbalance and a maximum payload
of 25 kg (55 lb). Both heads have a sliding range of the balance plate of 120 mm (4.7"). This is a significant increase in the case of the Video 18 SB, compared with the existing Video 18 Plus and its sliding range of 70 mm (2.8").

With sales of over 50,000 units, the Video 18 is one of the most successful
ENG heads in the world – one reason why further enhancement to the head has created so much excitement. Just before IBC 2005, Sachtler launched five new SPEEDBALANCE fluid heads. With their payload ranges of 1 to 16 kg / 2.2 to
35.3 lb, the five heads – Video 15 SB, DV 12 SB, DV 8/100 SB, DV 8 SB and
DV 6 SB – offer high-precision and extremely fast counterbalance for all digital camcorders from broadcast to MiniDV. Each of the heads is also available in total system packages that include a tripod, spreader and cover or padded bag.

When developing these new fluid heads, Sachtler has continued to follow its secret of success – step switching. It allows camera operators to optimally balance the fluid head and camera in no time at all. While stepless systems often require time-consuming adjustments by trial and error, graduated-step counterbalance gives you perfect set-ups on demand.
